MS Word documents, Excel Spreadsheets and Access are the three main

Thanks for your insights. Gordon

Or consider OpenOffice. I have MS Office 2007 (employer paid for it)
but rarely use it. Back in 2004 I went OpenOffice and no regrets.

But the OP was looking to *upgrade* not downgrade... :-)

BTW, you should make the switch to LibreOffice. OpenOffice development
is essentially stagnant, pretty much all of the developers moved to the
LibreOffice fork and have been making regular updates.

Do you NEED to upgrade? Or just WANT to? Office 2007 stop working all
of a sudden? Not doing what you need it to do, etc? If not, then
continue to use it until it does.

I don't believe in upgrading software for no other reason than there is
a newer version. Upgrading is how MS makes money.

Stef

PS. Still using Word 2000 in my emulated XP virtual machine.. Works
fine.

My reason for wanting to upgrade is that I exchange documents with
others, frequently, and sometimes their newer version document won't
open in my older version. Gordon

It's your money, obviously, but it would cost nothing to try libreoffice
(for free) and see if it meets your needs.

Kingsoft Office 2013 free is nearly identical to MS Office.

http://www.ksosoft.com/product/office-free.html

It only has three programs and is missing an email program.

You should be fine with file/feature compatibility going from Office 2007 to
2013.

Office 2013 comes in a variety of flavors
Office 365 (annual fee)
Office Home and Student
Office Home an Business
Office Professional

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/...oryID.62685900

Additional info on each version
http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-annou...ng-7000004381/

Note: Office comes in full version software (download only, Product Key
card, no DVD included in purchased product)
- i.e. there is no upgrade media or download - it's all full version
software

Correction:
Last line should say
- i.e. there is no upgrade media *for* download - it's all full version
software

That's exactly why MS makes the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word,
Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...ails.aspx?id=3

I still use Office 2003, and with the Compatibility Pack installed I can open
everything from later versions as far as I know.

Office 2003 will no longer be supported as of April of next year.

I don't need "support". It works and will continue to work.

Yes, Office 2003 applications will continue to work. After 10 yrs of
experience using the software the need for support is probably not
necessary (especially since Mainstream Support ended over 3 years
ago)....though the above point was the fact that since Extended Support
ends in April 2014 - program and security updates will no longer be
available.

Question is if you install it will it activate? Will XP activate? I mean
they both *are* genuine.

In April...most likely. In the future, possibly not and more likely if
installing XP RTM/Sp1/Sp2.
- for those with XP and Office pre 2007 it would be wise to have a
full image with the o/s and programs as insurance. Once a program ends
product lifecycle the need to permit it connecting to the servers for
anything (validation, genuine-ness, activation) diminishes every day
post EOL....all it takes is a few bits flipped on the backend.
