Well, I did it - dropped almost a grand. 900 and change, including
Windows 7 Pro.

I now live in fear of paying too much attention to the prices of

That happened at work. We were using this pitiful piece
of software, that the runtime for the work we were doing,
allowed plenty of time for coffee breaks. You'd start
a run, then head off to the cafeteria.

The software was written internally. The first version
of software, parsed one letter at a time, for what it
was doing. The author rewrote that section, making
the program 100x faster! Needless to say, we were
cheated out of many coffee breaks after that. It
would complete in the blink of an eye, compared
to the molasses like performance it had previously.

Too fast computer = no coffee break.

Granted I have not finished installing everything - and there's still a
chance for me to bring this thing to it's knees... but I still have to
say it is *fast*...

Was hoping for about 25% improvement in response time, but what I'm
seeing now, as I install app-after-app is more like 300%.

Only two areas where it's slower are "Network" (it takes forever to
populate all the network devices - but that can be worked around with
shortcuts) and opening up installer .EXE's (where it seems to be doing a
lot of checking in the background).

If you were building one of these things and had a bunch of 32-bit XP

licenses already on hand (i.e. no cost), would you pay the extra money

to put Windows 7 on it - or would you be happy to stay with XP?
