Thanks John, that did it for me, too. But now what happened to the previous login account that was named what was the user name (left of the @ sign) of the Microsoft email account? I don't find it anywhere. I'm not quite sure what you are asking, but If you want to go back to the Microsoft account again with your original login Then: Return to the Accounts page Disconnect the local account Switch back to the Microsoft account Again I'm not too sure of the above as I have not gone that route myself. Sorry if that is of little help to you. John I'm sorry I wasn't clear. While I was on the Microsoft email account, let's say , the login screen showed "MyName" and I assume there was a home directory set up with the name "MyName" under the Users folder. Just like now there is a "Boss" home directory because that's my local login name now. I thought I would still find the "MyName" directory under the Users folder, but it's not there. But then it may never have been there in the first place and I just imagined that based on my prior experience with the local user name and password login method. Not to mention Unix or Linux where there are also user directories corresponding to the login names. I hope I explained myself clearer now because this is the best I can do. OK that's clear enough. My apologies for being a bit dim. Have you lost any user files as a result of the change to a local account? John |

I don't find it anywhere. You changed the account from a MSFT account (email address) to a Local account (username). - i.e. you didn't create a new one just changed its account type. - if you need both you will need to create one That's kinda what I figured after I also changed to a local account, and I found everything was just as it was as far as Start menu, programs, games, etc. I haven't seen any problems with anything connected to Microsoft since doing so; for example, WAU still works fine (it let me know I had updates available, since that's my setting), and they installed just fine when I let them. I understand that Cloud storage is not available(?), but that's ok; I do my backups locally on external HDDs anyhow. And whenever I need SkyDrive (not so much since the MS Forums have gone to ****), I just login with my Microsoft user name and password on it, and upload/download from my local PC account. Life is good :-) -- SC Tom |

I think you'll find that you lost nothing. Mine hasn't changed a bit other than the user name. All my old documents, programs and updates, and any "special" folders I created from the time I installed the Win8.1 upgrade to when I changed to a local user are still the same, and I have the same permissions to them (I'm always admin on my machines anyhow). -- SC Tom |

Click Create New Account 2. Click Continue using existing account Yup, that's what I did. Nothing changed in log-in. But OP wants to avoid using the newly created account. If the old account still exists, he should be able to make it the default log-in. How do you that with Win8.1? Yes, you've got it. I am past the 8.1 Store update, so I need a way to revert back to the old local account. I'm not too sure but I think the steps are something like: Charms Menu Settings Change PC Settings Accounts Then: Click on Disconnect (just below username) Type in current (Microsoft) password Click Next Switch to Local Account window Type Username Type Password Confirm Password Give Password hint Click Next Click Signout and Finish I've not had to do it myself as I managed to do the 8.1 upgrade and retain my local account login - so I can't confirm that it works. John I've upgraded to 8.1 yesterday and I was not aware of this change until it restarted and ask for my Hotmail login. I'd like to go back to local login but I have a question: What is the "Charms" menu? TIA |

However, the first screen on bootup is still not the login screen. Can that be made the first? |
