I have no folder(s) in the taskbar. I nothing that opening results
in showing computer to right click on.

I do have - open file explorer, right click on This PC, click on
Properties. And, of course, the keyboard shortcut mentioned by Mr.
Blake.

Help me out here... what are you talking about?

What I posted is for Windows 8. My mistake since I guess 8.1 is different.

Nope, my bad - you was more right than me. I have Win 8 Pro/Win 8.1
Pro. From what I can tell, that item is named "Computer" in Win 8 and
"My PC" in Win 8 Pro.

Wonder if that was intentional, or slipped by.

Gordon said Win 8, so he is seeing "Computer".

Lesson learned: I will specifically spell out what I am looking at...
"On my computer, Windows 8.1 Pro... etc"

And Mr. Blake's response covers both possibilities - so he gets an
attaboy.

Thanks, but feel free to call me "Ken."

Ken

I recently had a pop-up that indicated the new Windows 8.1 update was

preinstalled. It has worked very well and I have no need/reason to
update to 8.1 but thought maybe I should do so, just to keep abreast
of things as they developed.

How do I find out if this update installed successfully, and if it
didn't, how do I go about getting it downloaded and installed. My
computer seems to be working very well and I have no reason to suspect
that something is messed up. What gives??? Gordon

Thanks for all the responses. I think things are going reasonably
well, but very slowly. I've been downloading the 8.1 files for about 3
hours and the indicator shows the downloads are about 37% complete. So
slow it will have to speed up to stop! Gordon

Downloaded, installed and briefly checked out. It seems to have gone
well and everything is working as it should. Thanks again for the
information all of you provided. Gordon

I've been playing around with my new Windows 8.1 update this morning.
I like it! There is still one thing I would like to get resolved if
there is any way to do so. I use an HP Officejet 7000 Wide Format
printer and would like to be able to adjust the margins in documents
other than MS Word. Word provides means for adjusting the print
margins from the Word toolbar but most other applications don't seem
to have this function.

Is there any way in MS Windows 8.1 for me to set the document margins
to a new default? Gordon

I should think it was totally application dependent...

There are two ways you can adjust the printer. If you can find the
print drive, (not an easy task in W 8.1) you can set defaults for the
printer.

Usually there is a page set up in most programs. The setting created in
one program tend to stick in the print driver until changed by another
program.

You must have meant to reply to Gordon, not me.

I am not trying to adjust a printer...

I don't think it saves anything to the printer driver ?

Printer specific settings are stored in the Registry. For
example, my printer tray is set to "Tabloid" or 11x17 paper
right now. That's considered a global value. I checked
and the setting is in the Registry.

Each printer has a value that says how close to the edge it
can print. But that's not a margin. And it's considered a
printer property.

Programs like Word, have things like "normal.dot" for storing
information. It could be that a margin value is stored in there.
It would be "bad practice", for LibreOffice to sniff out "normal.dot"
or any other settings files from Word, and copy the settings, because
that might not be what the user wants.

However, it *might* be possible for LibreOffice to understand and use
those settings if you let it open normal.dot (or any other .dot file).

That would be a good test of compatibility :-)

OK, I went to LO, chose Templates on the start screen and *Imported*
Normal.dot. I also looked at (opened as a file, not as a template)
another template, Standard Resume.dot or something like that.

Both seemed to work OK, but I'm not very conversant with templates, so
I'm less than sure.

It seemed to work.

Right click " This PC" Click Properties and you will have your version.

Rene

Rene, are you talking about Windows 8 or Windows 7? I can't find any
"This PC" to right click on. Gordon

Gordon, while in the main Win8 screen, start typing 'This PC' and a
search window pane will appear on the right. Click on it. Then do a
right click on it. (My hunch is that if Win 8.1 had installed on your
Pavilion, you would know about it. It does a re-boot and s new colourful
logon screen appears. I have a feeling the update was not successful.)

I also have a Pavilion, but I updated it from the MS Store the day after
it was released. The process was different.
