While the article is centered on upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1 without a MSFT account...the additional details and commentary are well worth the time for anyone considering moving from 8 to 8.1 with a Local Account or a MSFT account. In addition to Local Account configuration the other important takeaways a 1. Hardware system requirement changes for 8.1 relative to 8 - everything that runs 8 may not run 8.1 2. Potential causes of failures in the upgrade process: - user profile data folders moved from the default location - not using latest drivers - Windows Updates not current - presence of incompatible 3rd party software 3. You're supposed to "answer the quick question" in the middle of the page to reveal the text below. Apparently it doesn't matter what you put in - to the question, "Assuming the slogan "Making Deals Easy" was the slogan for a game, what you do you think this game is all about?" I answered, "Eels on my shins." I guess that was the right answer, because then I could read the article. |

The text appeared, as if by magic (or as if by JavaScript). I had ignored the question dialog - I guess I shouldn't have ;-) BTW, my question was "Do you use an iPhone", and I answered truthfully. The two browsers where it worked didn't want to know what kind of phone I use. -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

There's no way I would be strong armed into "signing in" with a Microsoft Passport / .NET / Hotmail / Windows Live / Outlook.com type account. And they can call it signing in all they want, I say log on. WireTalk -- Are you Christian? But stumbling online?
