Susan always does a great job of providing the details surrounding
installation, potential issues and sound recommendations.

While the article is centered on upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1 without
a MSFT account...the additional details and commentary are well worth
the time for anyone considering moving from 8 to 8.1 with a Local
Account or a MSFT account.

In addition to Local Account configuration the other important takeaways
a

1. Hardware system requirement changes for 8.1 relative to 8
- everything that runs 8 may not run 8.1
2. Potential causes of failures in the upgrade process:
- user profile data folders moved from the default location
- not using latest drivers
- Windows Updates not current
- presence of incompatible 3rd party software
3. Windows 8.1 does not reset the lifecycle clock like earlier operating
system Service Packs. Support for 8 and 8.1 end on the same date. Users
have 2 yrs (until Nov. 2015) to install 8.1 before support ends.
4. Recommendation to disable AV and removal of 3rd party system cleaners
5. If the upgrade fails the need to reset Windows Update services so the
Store will re-offer the 8.1 upgrade

Everyone that writes for them does an excellent job. I always look
forward to their monthly newsletter.

The link brings up a page in which all the lines of text are just grey
stripes.

Now *that* is strange!

I might switch to another browser, just for fun:
OK. The page works in IE and Safari, but not in Chrome or my default,
Firefox.

Hmm.

It's an advertising thing. You're supposed to "answer the quick
question" in the middle of the page to reveal the text below.
Apparently it doesn't matter what you put in - to the question,
"Assuming the slogan "Making Deals Easy" was the slogan for a game,
what you do you think this game is all about?" I answered, "Eels on my
shins." I guess that was the right answer, because then I could read
the article.

OK in Chrome and FF here, and it looks much better in FF!

Do you have something Bloch-ing it?

In reaction to your remarks above, I went back to the FF page and
answered the question. The text appeared, as if by magic (or as if by
JavaScript). I had ignored the question dialog - I guess I shouldn't
have ;-)

BTW, my question was "Do you use an iPhone", and I answered truthfully.

The two browsers where it worked didn't want to know what kind of phone
I use.

LOL Old news! There's no way I would be strong armed into "signing in"
with a Microsoft Passport / .NET / Hotmail / Windows Live / Outlook.com
type account.

And they can call it signing in all they want, I say log on.
