Right. One should uninstall (or unpin if there's no uninstall option)
all the Metro style "apps". For each and every one there's something
better that you can use instead.

unnecessary stuff.

Most of those programs did not survive the first hour after Windows said
it was installed.

I just installed Windows 8.1 Pro Thursday and am becoming acclimated to
it. Like you, I deleted most of the apps, although the one for maps
looked interesting. Too much on my plate at the moment to dig into it
much.
