Default Windows 8.1 Pro - troubleshooting email

I've recently installed Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit) edition and am
adjusting to it. There have been some good and some not so good
experiences. Contrary to expectations, I was able to install Microsoft
Office 2003 directly on Windows 8.1; with one exception, it seems to be
working. I originally thought I would have to install it in the WinXP
VM I created using Hyper-V. I haven't installed all my old software,
so that's too early yet to say how it's going to go. I'm still getting
used to working with the display, but I can adjust to it over time.

The big problem I'm troubleshooting at present relates to Office 2003
Outlook and wondered if anyone else has had the same problem and how
they fixed it.

Office Outlook opens without any problem that I can see. I choose the
POP connection to get and receive email. After I enter my account
info, not just the immediate screen but also underneath the "more"
button (ports, etc.), the "test message" tool reports successfully
starting and completing the connection to my email accounts, but Office
Outlook fails to actually send the test email. I have confirmed that
my settings match the ones on my WinXP. The error message reports that
communications were unexpectedly terminated. I'm not sure what that's
about - I've seen that sometimes using my WinXP but I still can send
and receive email in WinXP.

After working with this a bit, I drilled down to the Windows 8.1 app to
allow communicating through the firewall and specifically set Outlook
to have permission to communicate. I did not see any change in my
problem.

In short, I connect to my email account but email messages are neither
sent nor received.

What am I missing? Is this a quirk between WinXP and Windows 8.1 Pro?
Is there some network or firewall setting I need to change, enable or
disable?

Thanks,

John

I discovered the problem. Microsoft OUtlook was resetting the SSL port
to its default value after I selected use SSL. I had forgotten about
this quirk in its behavior.

Yes, it's important to verify the necessary incoming and outgoing ports
after selecting SSL.

The same applies to other email clients not just Outlook (03,07,10,13).

you misunderstand. The program itself was not accepting the changes.
It had to be done in a specific order. It was not a matter of entering
the wrong port number. Changing the port to the right one and
selecting the box undid the change. Counterintuitively, I had to
select the box and THEN change the port number. Well, I got it
straight regardless whether my description of the sequence is or is not
the right one (I'm working from memory here and am just happy to have
fixed my problem).

No, I didn't. For most email programs the correct sequence is to select
SSL/TLS/Auto then set the port if not automatically selected, verify
settings on the tab then Apply/OK.
