Security settings question
Is there a security setting in Windows 8.1 that restricts or blocks
images in non-Microsoft browsers and apps? I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro and am troubleshooting a Firefox browser problem. The browser problem is that background icons and graphics are not displayed in the browser window. For example, forums.bethsoft.com has a background graphic as part of its normal display. All I see is the text and links. At a different web site, I have to move my cursor until I see it change shape to find the button on a form to print a list of items. The function works; I just can't see the graphic element of the function on the page. The space where it is is white space. I have already gone over the FF tools section and its various settings to see if I had blocked something in error turning on and off various javascript options and pop up windows options; none of those changed the screen display. Before I get into the about:config section in detail, I wanted to check about Windows 8.1 security and firewall settings because I had changed some but not all of those to more restrictive settings. My previous experience with Windows settings was under WinXP. In WinXP, internet security settings seemed to apply only to use of Internet Explorer and not to Firefox. I don't know if that is true for the firewall and security settings available under Windows 8.1. THanks, John |

THanks, John I wouldn't think that Win8's IE settings (or any other OS settings) would have any effect on Firefox that wouldn't also affect IE. I went to bethsoft with both IE11 and Firefox 25.0.1 and the site behaved the same in either browser (Win8.1 Pro 64-bit). You may be missing a plug-in for FF, or you may need a newer version, if you're not already there. My guess would be either Shockwave Flash or Java, leaning towards Flash. Who knows, it may even need the Silverlight plug-in. I have Java SE7 U45 10.45.2.18, Shockwave Flash 11.8.800.168, and Silverlight Plug-in 5.1.20913.0 in my FF. -- SC Tom |

My FF is ver 25.0 and displays worked properly under WinXP. Same for Flash. I never installed Silverlight on WinXP and could still see the images. I remain thinking that my problem is being caused either by something I've overlooked in my browser settings (which I tried as much as possible to stick with what worked for it in WinXP) or some setting I changed in Windows 8.1 is generating an unintended consequence. It may be as "simple" as something in Windows 8.1 display and general security settings. I'm not that familiar with it as evidenced by earlier problems I reported in this newsgroup. wrt Bethsoft, the pages there should have a light colored text against a call it dark brown background. What I see displayed is just the text against a white background. The links work. The box for searching is there but is effectively white on white. I only know I'm over it because the shape of the cursor changes. John |
