All of our legacy ports and cables will still be as they are today, n'est-ce pas? That is, the new cables won't work in the old ports... I believe that the new Apple Lightning connectors and ports are set up to be reversible, although I haven't been interested enough to verify that. I have had no trouble with the old cables, since the plug's orientation is easy to see - except that there are some ports that are upside down. I have a front panel add-on USB3 port that is like that - the cable has to be plugged in with the smooth side down. Never mind, I take it back - vertical ports on the back panel are hard to remember: Smooth side right? Smooth side left? Try it and you will know if you're wrong :-) -- Gene E. Can't. I have mixed feelings about a new design. I foresee a slew of converter plugs. Bah. I can't either. My remark was a red herring directed to Mr Doe :-) On another NG the suggestion was made to change the current design so it guides the new plug when correctly oriented, and blocks it if incorrectly oriented. If done right, old plugs would still fit if correctly oriented. The old plugs are blocked if not correctly oriented, but they're not guided when they are oriented correctly - IOW, I agree with you. The ones I hate are micro USB, which somehow always seem to be about to break when I am inserting them :-) -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

Naturally, I hope you are right, but as is obvious, I retain a modicum of doubt. Thinking about the current ports, I can't manage to visualize a way to make them compatible - but I wouldn't have thought of the current arrangement of the USB3 ports either :-) -- Gene E.
