Default Win 8 Tutorial

My mother, who is in her 70s and still going strong, will be receiving a
new computer from me for Christmas because her current desktop is almost
as old as her.

I am somewhat familiar with Win 8 but I use the basics on my laptop.
Therefore, that's all I'll be able to show her when we set up her
system. Can anyone suggest a good tutorial she can visit to learn the
full scope of Win 8?

Thanks

Stardoc's Start8 is great @ $4.99
and so is Startisback from startisback.com @ $2.99

So price is not an issue. But both work so close to win7 menu. I
like the 2nd a bit better, but just ever so "bit".

And if you install Teamviewer9 so it automatically starts when windows
starts, you can easily connect in and show her things or help when she
needs help. My sister can't delete emails, if that gives you a clue!

I have found 3 apps you can get from the store too that are quite
helpful (free):
Help+Tips, I think this got loaded with the 8.1 upgrade.
Windows 8 Handbook
Learn Windows 8
I'd post a photo but I haven't quite got the hand on how to or where to
post photos for links in emails/messages yet. Never had the need till now.

I have all 3 apps since each has its good and bad points.

It would probably be appropriate to first determine what she does with
her old pc then yourself learn how to do that what she would need on
Windows 8 and personally show her how to accomplish the same.

Windows 8 may be a different UI, but if all she needs is a few tiles to
accomplish her task on the Windows 8 Modern Menu place those tiles on
the left side and unpin the balance of unnecessary tasks (just rt click,
unpin from Start). Configure Windows Update to automatically install
updates.

She'll be in better shape to execute the same tasks for only those apps
or applications that she needs.

This means she is currently using WinXP (or older)? Yep, Win 8.1 will
probably handicap her in a way her previous 70 years have not managed to
do so far.

Joking aside - my suggestion is 'Getting Started with Windows 8'
(included on the Win 8 'Start' page) is a good place to start.

Windows 8.1 for Dummies by Andy Rathbone with the accompanying
DVD. It's on Amazon.com and is inexpensive. I've recommended
this book and DVD to my 73-year-old sister and her runnin' buddy
who are facing moving on from Windows XP.

Rathbone is much less detailed and more elementary than Woody
Leonhard's Windows 8.1 for Dummies which I recommend for the more
advanced user.

I am the same age. Install Start8 so she has a point to start from, that
she would be familiar with. She can use the new interface from the menu.

If she's used to Windows before 8, then Start8 and a few minor
tweaks will allow her to live on the Desktop rather than the
Start screen. I have Start8 on my Windows 8.1 machine and I love
it.

I'd recommend that she go immediately from Windows 8 to 8.1 if
she her new computer comes with 8. If she does that, I'd
recommend that she stay away from any Window8 materials and stick
with Windows 8.1 writings.

If you have screen capture software Make her your own tutorial.
If you don't have screen capture software i would recommend OBS
OBS stands for 'open broadcaster software' Which is free.

If you do decide to make your own tutorials you can break them
up into different subjects
IE
How to use metro interface
How to move files
how to use control panel
but a few and so forth.
that way she does not have to go through some one else's tutorial
to get to what she wants. Then you can leave them on her pc and
she can use them when she wants.

Your mother will respond better to some ones voice she knows.

If you have no desire to do the above Youtube
