Default Stupid WordPress Question

Okay, this is a stupid question, but my brain is numb from rooting around
the WordPress forums and such. Can someone direct me to a simple place
where I can get the info I need? I need to move WordPress from one ISP to
another. I can't make heads or tails of the process involved. I also can't
get access to the server where the files reside now, but luckily I
downloaded them about 2 months ago. Now, I CAN log in and out of WordPress
itself, but not the directory where it's currently stored on the ISP.

I've spent a couple hours trying to find out but it looks like nobody
actually moves WordPress files from one server to another, or at least
they're not tellin' me.

Thanks ever so.

You can post your WP questions at this newsgroup:

news.gowestweb.com

this is the actual newsgroup for WP
gowest.wordpress

You have tried Wordpress forums right? If not try this link as well:

http://wordpress.org/support/forum/installation

Good luck.

In addition to Good Guy's suggestion, another best place to ask is your
*NEW* ISP and they will tell you if you have permission, and if so how
to, to access to directories.

My two cents, WordPress involves three parts: the application itself
(WordPress), a server supports PHP scripting, and a database(usually
MySQL).

So again, ask your *NEW* ISP first and they should be more than happy to
assist you to get the new business. You may also need to migrate your
old data to the new database.

For preparation, read the following:

Requirements: http://wordpress.org/about/requirements/

Installation: http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress

Good luck.

Ok, with limited access (ie only through the WordPress dashboard)
options are limited, but this is the simplest:

1. Go to Tools, Export, select All content and Download Export File.

This will get you an XML file with the bulk of your site. It does not
export widgets, or plugins, or themes (see
http://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/impo...tes-multisite/
for a handy table of what it does and does not do).

2. On your new site (fresh WP install) install the themes and plugins
you will need for your site and activate them.

3. On the new install go to Tools, Import, WordPress (you *may* need to
install the WordPress Importer plug-in if you don't have it already).
There are options to download files from the original site during import
(check that), and options to import users or assign posts etc to a new
or different user. Pretty self-explanatory.

4. Check your newly restored site. There will almost certainly be some
finishing or tweaking required, header images, custom menus etc, but the
bulk of the work will be done.

Optionally there are a number of backup plugins, (none of which really
seemed to do what I wanted but YMMV) or if you have shell or CPanel
access you can go the database dump route and copy the wp-content
uploads, plugins and themes directories.

I've moved several WP sites and this process has worked for me every time:

1. FTP all the files down to a local drive.
2. Export the SQL database to the same location.
3. Upload files to the new location.
4. Import the SQL database to the new server.
5. Edit the wp-config.php file to reflect the new database location and
login details.

Ask your current ISP hosting the WP site for the FTP details.
