Is it easy to un-install Chrome or Firefox?

No. The uninstall completes okay but (with Google Chrome) there are
tons of registry and file remnants to clean out, plus there are other
processes to get rid of, like Google Updater. It takes a lot of work to
eradicate all traces of Chrome from your computer.

For Firefox, and as I recall, it will leave behind some registry remnant
but it will leave behind its databases. The assumption they make is
that you are uninstalling Firefox to then reinstall it to resolve
problems with that program. Some info he

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...-your-computer

but I don't know if it is complete. My general recommendation is to
never install software you do not intend to use. Uninstallers are
rarely complete, plus many registry entries are from using the program
(Windows or the program added or changed the registry) which the
uninstaller will never know about (it only logs the changes it made
during the installation).

You can try to use uninstaller utilities (Revo Uninstaller - free
version only usable on 32-bit Windows - and Geek Uninstaller) but both
take safe approaches in removing known registry entries and files. If
they removed every reference to the program, they could remove entries
they shouldn't touch, like a backup program having entries for use with
its operation in the presence of those other programs. Revo and Geek
will probably get rid of more remnants but they won't get them all nor
do they try to.

1.most times I try to get into a/c I am returned to the sign-in page

a/c?

typo (user error)

Are you manually entering the username and password?

Are you relying on cached credentials in the web browser? If so, does
clearing that cache eliminate the login rejection?

Are you using a password manager and having it enter your login
credentials? If so, have you logged into it using its password so it
can then automatically insert your login credentials at web sites?
Also, has the web page changed? Since auto-insertion of any text
requires association the stored credentials to objects with specific
names for those objects, a change in the web page or the names of
objects will result in the password manager not knowing where to insert
the stored credentials.

3. I've changed my password but still getting 1. and 2.

Did you flush your web browser's TIF (temporary internet files)? You
should configure the web browser to do that on exit but maybe you are
not exiting the web browser after changing the password.

4. Ebay help chatline have suggested I change to Chrome or Firefox.

That's an ignorant 1st level tech's canned response. They don't know
the cause of the problem, they don't know how to fix it, so they are
shoving keywords into a database of canned responses. Simply refuse to
install other software to resolve issues in the software you do use.

When they state this as a solution, ask them why they don't support the
top 3 web browsers and only 2 of them. If you were using Firefox to
report the problem, guess what would be their response? Yeah, try
Google Chrome or IE. Whatever you are using then they will trying
shotgunning a solution by suggestion to use something else.

5. They've suggested I 'clear cache and cookies'. I've followed the
following link but left "delete browsing history on exit"
http://agsci.psu.edu/it/how-to/clear...-history-cache
Still no joy.

Ooh, IE8. A lot of sites have a cutoff of IE9. There are features in
IE9 that are not available in IE8. Could be their web site is coded to
require later features. I've run into my bank's login page that was
that way.

One way to get around a version check (which does not obviate the lack
of features) is to change the UserAgent header sent by the web browser.
You make your web browser lie about which version it is. The site that
doesn't work with an old version might work well enough if it thinks it
is working with a later version.

UApick is an extension for IE that lets you report a different UA string
than the default one reported by IE.

6. Last W7 update was on the 9th Sept. In desperation I restored to 8th Sept
but still no luck.

If you are using Windows 7, why have you not yet upgraded to IE 11?

On two occasions I managed to get into my ebay account but to navigate
within menus (watch list, purchase history, messages etc) I was forced to
use the refresh button in browser or F5.

Could be bad Javascripting. It got misaligned regarding under which
context the script was running. Another cause is blocking sites from
which some scripting is retrieved. Some security programs include URL
blocking so check if they are blocking eBay or any of the domains from
which eBay gets resources (scripts, CSS, images, etc). You can use
Fiddler to see what resources (sites) the eBay page is trying to reach.

IE has its TPL (tracking protection list) that can be used to block
sites. For example, I subscribe to TPLs for EasyList, EasyPrivacy,
Fanboy, and Stop Google Tracking. While AdBlock doesn't have an
extension for IE, I can use TPLs to subscribe to the same adblock
blacklists as does AdBlock. When blocking resources that a site needs
to properly render its page, the page may misbehave. As an example,
many sites use the jquery library instead of writing all its functions
by hand; i.e., code reuse (that's what libs are for). They can use a
local copy of jquery on their server or they can reference the jquery
lib back at Google Code. If they host a local copy of jquery but it is
at a different host or domain than for the web page, or if they
reference the one back at Google, you blocking access to that resource
means script in the web page cannot get at the functions it needs to
paint the page. Adblocking is handy to get rid of noise in web pages
but it can also break web pages.

What extensions have you installed into IE? Have you tried running IE
in its safe mode (add the -extoff command-line argument)?

That's a good suggestion. Try it, see if it works, and simply unplug
the USB thumb drive when done.

But aren't you stuck with installing their Portable Apps Platform
product (http://portableapps.com/download) whether separately or bundled
in with the portable-ized product?

They also have a Google Chrome portable:

It should be your *first* resort, since both are far superior and more
secure than IE. You should be using either as your default browser.

I honestly don't know the answer to that Paul. When I typed "Ebay" into
Google, I got 285million results in 0.38 secs.

I clicked on the first link. Wouldn't it be expensive for a phishing proxy
to get themselves promoted to number one on google results?

As I said in my opening post "I'm not very techy" so I'm probably vulnerable
to hacking etc.

Thanks Vanguard, appreciate your time spent on this. I'm not very techy and
most of your post has gone over my pointy head.

I haven't (knowingly) used a password manager. I'm now on password 3 (in

You are most welcome! :-)

Out of interest, DID you reset IE as I suggested earlier today?

I looked at it but didn't like the warning "re-setting is irreversible". My
Del is about 4 years old. I guess there have been numerous tweaks overtime.
Maybe a 4 year old IE will be unrecognisable.

It's worked so well for a number of years, I'm a bit reluctant to change :-)

Talking of change, six months ago we changed ISP, because virgin.net weren't
doing the super-fast stuff. There is an overlap period but the 6 month
period lapsed 10 days ago. virgin should have pulled the plug by now. I
could delete them from my system but having a (free) 2nd email could be
handy. I get WLM error messages, which maybe due to having 2 ISPs but I can
live with this UNLESS it's causing the Ebay problems.

One other thing I've noticed - when I Shut Down, I get a message "Waiting
for Babylon.exe, this program is preventing shutdown" After about 30 secs
the computer shuts down ok. Don't know if Babylon is an issue.

Is this guy serious or his he just pulling everyone's chain?

I know it's not an excuse but I've been retired 15 years. Post retirement,
the memory bank has slow retention.

I am well aware that there are 100 year olds out there who are quite
computer literate.

If you and "none" could cut me some slack for a couple of days, this problem
will get sorted and normal service will resume. Thanks in anticipation.

That relies on keeping cookies. If IE is configured to flush cookies on
exit then the cookie won't be available in your next IE seesion.

a) Sometimes when I click on Ebay it askes me to enter my user ID and
password - I prefer this method.

Then you don't want to save cookies.

b) twice this morning, when I clicked on Ebay, my user ID and password
(several dots) were already entered. How do I stop this please?

Internet Options - General tab - Browsing history section - enable
"Delete browsing history on exit"

Then click the Delete button and make sure "Cookies are web site data"
are selected for purge on exit.

Also make sure "Preserve Favorites website data" is NOT selected. For
sites in your Favorites list, and if this is enabled, cookies and other
local data will be retrain between IE sessions for sites in your
Favorites list. If no eBay site is in your Favorites list then this
setting has no effect for that site.

These changes are now made. I've also downloaded Firefox which does work
seamlessly.

I'll keep I.E. as default but toggle between the two. Thanks once again.
