Win10 forced upgrade?
I rarely use my win7 machine. I've heard it both ways -- (1) you won't
get a win10 upgrade unless you ask; and (2) you'll be upgraded automatically. I'm happy sticking with win7 as long as TurboTax/HRBlock are and do not EVER want to upgrade unless I have to. Am I safe? -- Cheers, Bev ================================================== ===== "Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less." -- Colin Powell, former Good Guy |

As of yet, Microsoft isn't forcing Win10 updates; you still have to actively choose to make the upgrade What they are doing in certain cases is having Win 7 / 8 *download* the Windows10 install files (all 3GB) to the hard-drive in preparation of an upgrade. Uninstalling "Update for Windows (KB3035583)" will prevent this latter behavior. Microsoft being Microsoft, however, there's no telling if they one day might decide to release the Win10 update as a "security update", which usually are uninstalled automatically. Certainly it would fit in with their current belief that they know best as to how to manage and maintain your computer. Still, I think it is rather unlikely given the blowback would be fairly severe. So they'll do everything they can to speed up the transition - download the files, install nagware as reminders - but won't actually force the upgrade. |

I have it set to 'tell me what they are and I'll tell you whether I want them or not', but that doesn't mean my wishes will be honored :-( I generally install the security updates, but nothing else. Since I turn the machine on less often than once a month, there are generally quite a few on the list... FWIW, the only thing I need the windows machine for is TurboTax, a lot of my Canon scanner functionality, and Garmin updates. Maybe other firmware updates, but I don't keep a list. Except for that stuff, linux does everything a 'normal' person needs. -- Cheers, Bev $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$ "The almost universal access to higher education here in the US has ruined a lot of potentially good manual laborers." -- Bob Hunt |

Windows is their operating system, and they can change the rules anytime. My banking website provides a link to TurboTax, and I have done my taxes online for the Last two years using Linux Mint without any problems. You can also find a good safe link to TurboTax at irs.gov. |

You can also find a good safe link to TurboTax at irs.gov. Of all the things I don't want to depend on internet connectivity for, tax crap is at the top of the list. I'm willing to pay actual cash money to keep it on my computer at home -- it's balky enough running on my machine, much less over the net. Moreover, one year TT told me I had submitted my taxes on line on April 13 but didn't send an actual ack, so I printed and snail-mailed them. Good choice, because they were NOT submitted on line. That was the last time I tried that -- all things considered, postage is cheap. Besides, California charges something like $20 to submit electronically, which is yet one more insane thing our government does. -- Cheers, Bev -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- I bought a tape called "Subliminal Advertising" The next day I bought 47 more. |
