Default Is there a way to set Num Locks so that they are always on?

Hi All,

Got a customer who constantly, accidentally turn off her
num lock, they get upset by the resulting chaos.

Is there a way I can lock it to always on?

Many thanks,
-T

I have found how to turn it on at boot from the registry,
but that will not help in this situation.

On a cold boot, use whatever fundtion key will given you the boot menu
from your bios. Somewhere in there, you will find boot up defaults,
including setting Num Lock. Since differeent bios might have different
boot menus, I cannot give you a step-by-step for this.

Hi David,

I know how to do this. Thank you. I also know how to
set a registry setting to turn Num Lock on when Windows
boots.

Problem: both these methods set the initial default. The
user can still turn them off. (And will.)

What I am looking for is way to force the issue such that
the operator can NEVER turn Num Locks off. I am dealing
with some klutzes here.

I am not beyond a keyboard that does the same thing. hardware
or software, I don't care.

Thank you for helping me with this,

-T

Edit the keyboard map?
http://www.klm32.com/KbdEdit.html

Or turn on "Toggle Keys" so the user hears a bleep whenever they
accidentally alter the lock key state.

Remove the keycap and put something under it to stop it being pressed.

The help file for Autohotkey suggests "SetNumLockState, AlwaysOn".

Autohotkey is essential equipment, IMHO, for so many reasons.

Do a search, num-lock locker, easily found.
Hint,

I have a caps-lock blocker, makes life MUCH easier on me.

Paul's given a link that looks like it'd do it without any hardware
mod.s, but I'd agree with the suggestion of trying toggle keys on your
customer first. Possibly also making sure the beeps are of sufficient
volume (may involve replacing the bleeper with a proper speaker, or vice
versa - you're considering a different keyboard, so I presume it's not a
laptop/netbook, on which changing the beeper might be difficult).

I use it because I do have occasional use for caps lock - though I will
admit I've never heard of a reason to want to turn num lock off, at
least not since modern keyboards with separate cursor keys. But others
in this thread _want_ to use the numpad for cursor movement, so who am I
to say (-:!

Couldn't you teach her how to turn numlock back on?

Actually never thought about this, but what's the use of being able to turn
numlock off?

Two cases:

1. People who came into computers before the present 101 (or so) key
keyboard layout became the norm, got used to using the keys on the
numeric pad to move the cursor. Though I lived through those
transitions, I adopted the new arrangement with welcome, but I know that
one can learn certain finger movements almost as unconscious, so doing
some things using those keys are automatic for some people; they may
find it impossible, or just not worth the bother forcing themselves to
learn, to use the alternative (inverted-T and six-pack) keys.

2. Many laptop and netbook keyboards, of course, don't have a numpad,
and in those cases you may _want_ numlock turned off. (I struggled using
it to insert special characters, but eventually found AllChars covered
most of the ones I wanted to use, and Diacrit the few others.) Even some
15" widescreen laptop keyboards are padless.

You're missing his point: she turns it off accidentally, so doesn't
realise she has done so and continues typing; this can be very
confusing, as your cursor can be on a line or even page other than where
you thought it was, and you don't know what (or where!) you have
typed/changed since you hit it. Knowing how to turn it back on doesn't
tell you what you've done since.

That was my thinking.

What? Aren't we talking about the working or non-working of the keypad
number keys?

Or are we talking about some kind of keypadless keyboard which has
overlap of the keypad and regular keyboard?

I think we need a better explanation of why it wouldn't be appropriate
for a user to understand the toggling of the numlock.

It seems to me that the accidental toggling of the insert key is more
confusing than losing the numlock.
