Microsoft Security Essentials - opinions ?
Just bought granddaughter a laptop with Windows 7 Pro.
Up to her if she goes to Windows 10. The laptop comes with Microsoft Security Essentials ready for setting up. Has anyone used this ? What is the consensus ? I have found good and bad reviews which dont really help to make an informed decision. I use Comodo suite on my desktop and have had no problems, so how does MSE compare ? Grateful for any advice. -- remove fred before emailing |

IMHO, MSE is OK, not great. If you have a machine that is being used conservatively, MSE should be adequate. If you have a machine being used by a young person, the odds are they will have significant exposure to threats. I am a big fan of Comodo. I would suggest you explore that for her machine and remove MSE. There are two reason for this recommendation: 1. Comodo makes great products. 2. You are familiar with it and can easily assist her if it is ever required. JMHO. In addition to his questions, would this work well along side Norton Antivirus, which I currently use in Real Time Mode? |

Microsoft Security Essentials - opinions ?
All the free anti-virus apps that I have tried will nag the heck out of
you and you have to be very careful installing since they sometime have pre-checked boxes to get you to the premium trial version that you do NOT need. MS Sec Essentials seems to be well behaved. -- -- No signature --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: --- |

You have this question also multiposted in alt.comp.virus http://archive.is/X6fP Please do not multipost! You multiposted also, why should others not!? The answer is still that it is not wise to have two(2) antivirus programs running real-time. They will bite each other!! |

In addition to his questions, would this work well along side Norton Antivirus, which I currently use in Real Time Mode? If you are asking me about running MSE and NAV; IMHO, NAV is no longer an appropriate choice for anyone. I find it to be bloated and moribund. On the other hand, Symantec Endpoint Protection, the corporate antivirus offering from Symantec, is quite capable and nimble for network installations. If you have a powerful machine and want another layer of protection in addition to NAV, I would consider adding Malwarebytes. I have Malwarebytes, but do not run it in Real Time - I run scans manually with it on a regular basis. So far, has not found anything - so good JMHO. |

You have this question also multiposted in alt.comp.virus http://archive.is/X6fP Please do not multipost! The answer is still that it is not wise to have two(2) antivirus programs running real-time. They will bite each other!! NAV Antivirus stand-alone is an acceptable AV/AM program. The majority of folks providing feedback on NAV haven't used it in years. The footprint is about 1/3 the size of pre-2012 and earler versions (the latter still the basis for the majority of feedback). On the flip size, NAV is a bit more agressive than MSE and if never used has a higher learning curve. Your question about running another AV/AM (e.g. MSE or Comodo) in addition to NAV is not recommended - it's to not run multiple AV/AM programs resident at the same time. Pick and AV program that best fits your needs and past user experience. If you've been using NAV and its been doing its job without any interference then stick with what you have. The difference in the case of NAV is cost since one renews the subscription for a fee while an AV/AM program like MSE is free. If you wish to supplement your AV/AM program with additional protection consider the free version of Malwarebytes Antimalware and run it manually on whatever schedule fits your needs. Prior to running any AV/AM application scan (resident program or supplemental non-resident) you might also consider clearing your temporary internet files cache (e.g. use CCleaner or your browser options to empty the temporary files) If you do decide to discontinue use of NAV (subscription based fee) in lieu of other free AV/AM programs (like MSE) it would be wise to a. uninstall NAV via Programs and Features b. download the NAV removal tool, and run it c. restart the system, then install another AV/AM program of your choice. -- ...winston msft mvp windows experience |

Grateful for any advice. Its sort of OK, but nowhere near the best free one. Bitdefender free edition is the best, and Avast! and AVG are much better than MSE, if you don't mind some adverts. If you don't mind paying, Bitdefender (paid edition) and Kaspersky are the best. -- Bob Tetbury, Gloucestershire, England Wife - a woman who has ceased to be your girlfriend but resents anyone trying to fill the vacancy. |

Grateful for any advice. I've used Security Essentials for years now, and it is one of the least obtrusive antivirus programs around. Everything else I've used often use up a lot of system resources. It's a simple basic AV system that does everything you need. That said, I have also found that it let in some newer viruses that others would've caught. Stuff that's been known about for years, will not get through, but newer stuff might get through. Yousuf Khan |

Since I dont yet know whether she will want to go to Windows 10 (hope not, but it depends on what they use at school), I have removed MSE and installed Comodo IS. -- remove fred before emailing |
