Google Chrome settings changing spontaneously
Today I noticed (again) that my settings were changed spontaneously!
I NEVER want Chrome to save ANY passwords, so I disabled this setting (again). I think this behaviour is becomming very suspicious! -- |\ /| | \/ |@rk \../ \/os |

Paul Well, maybe... That would be pretty stupid. Today I did a Chrome update and the settings are OK so far. But I'm becomming paranoid and I tend to keep checking now. Perhaps it is Chromecast related? I need Chrome to use Chromecast. If so, other users without Chromecast may not have these problems. I also had to use alt-ctrl-del to end 4 processes of Chrome. Is it normal to have 4 processes running? -- |\ /| | \/ |@rk \../ \/os |

Windows is notorious for changing settings and configurations spontaneously.. Is Chrome set as your default browser? Your system might also be infected. So, do a thorough malware scan. Stef |

Doesn't do that with either Linux or OSX. I think it's a Windows "quirk." Stef |

Windows is notorious for changing settings and configurations spontaneously.. I've heard that quite a few times, but examples seem to be rare. Typically, when something changes, there seems to be a reason for it, and I don't consider "spontaneous" to be a reason! :-) -- Char Jackson |

There is a setting, under Advanced Settings/System: "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed". It seems to be on by default. After turning it off, I see zero Chrome processes running when Chrome isn't. Jason |

I've heard that quite a few times, but examples seem to be rare. Typically, when something changes, there seems to be a reason for it, and I don't consider "spontaneous" to be a reason! :-) I meant Windows, in general. Not W7 specifically. Such occurences seemed to haunt XP and prior versions of Windows a lot more than 7. I used to get it enough with XP for it to be a concern, but could never find anything wrong. Frustratingly random they were. The settings and configuration changes almost always occurred after a reboot -- cold or warm. I got the feeling over time that for some reason during the boot process, some user configs couldn't be accessed, and so Windows used the System defaults instead. For two years now I've been runing XP -- my only Windows -- in VirtualBox 5 on a Linux host (Debian Wheezy 64-bit), fully updated and NOT connected to the Internet, and I've yet to experience any of those nasty resetting problems rare though they be. And the virtual system gets shutdown and reboot frequently. I only use it when I need it. Stef |

If you see that there's probably a reason involving something you're doing. I certainly haven't seen Windows change 3rd-party software. There's no way for Windows to be aware of things like Chrome settings. On the other hand, if you want control over your software you probably shouldn't be using Google products in the first place. |

There's no way for Windows to be aware of things like Chrome settings. Consider yourself lucky. As far as why it happens ... Yes, it could be malware or something similar, but in my experience it is rarely related to the user. From what I've discovered, it happens during booting. I've never seen or heard of it happening while the system is in use. "It's" just one of the many little wonderful Windows quirks. On the other hand, if you want control over your software you probably shouldn't be using Google products in the first place. And if you want control of your system, don't use Windows. ;-) Stef |

Maybe, such syncing REQUIRES passwords, etc to be saved on your system, and when you sync, Chrome is reset to "save passwords" to make future syncs possible. Just a guess. Stef |

Stef Sorry, I meant: "EXCEPT paswords and forms". I suppose it is possibly related to the synching process, but still it would be a bug to change settings without user permission. -- |\ /| | \/ |@rk \../ \/os |
