I just got a scam call from Dell Technical Support

https://krebsonsecurity.com/2016/02/...ice-tag-scams/ "Goodin said that theory still doesn?t explain how scammers obtained contact information and support histories. --- very scary " This Indian Dell Technical Support scam caller knew my computer make and model, and the service tag and my name, and address, and my phone number. That article is nice in that it says that others had the exact same problem, where the information isn't really on the computer. For example, while that zero-day Dell exploit would get the scammers my make, model, and service tag, it wouldn't give them my phone number nor my name and my address (all of which was accurate). I didn't ask them if they have my "service history" so next time they call (and they will), I will have that ready for them. |

I just got a scam call from Dell Technical Support

I've had several similar calls claiming to be from Microsoft. This is the first time I've heard of a fake Dell call, and the fact that they know your service tag number is disturbing. Are there any public reports of Dell having their user database hacked? I googled and found *tons* of these fake Dell service calls on the Dell web site itself. http://www.10zenmonkeys.com/2016/01/...s-been-hacked/ Dell knows all about it, and says in 2016 only that they weren't hacked so most people are saying what Dell isn't saying, which is that it's probably an "inside job". Dell customers targeted by phone scams that might be an inside job https://www.extremetech.com/computin...-an-inside-job Dell says that they want to know about all these calls and they have a web site where you can report it to them. Where to report to Dell the Indian Dell Technical Support Phone Scam: https://www.dell.com/support/inciden...eportphonescam |

I just got a scam call from Dell Technical Support

Depends upon the state. All parties to the conversation must be warned in Maryland as Linda Tripp found out after she recorded Monica Lewinski. But in many other states any party to the conversation may record it with no warning given. http://www.dmlp.org/legal-guide/reco...-conversations I am not a lawyer but I would think that in most states, you're allowed to record a crime in progress. Even if not, I'm sure a judge isn't gonna throw the book at you if that's what you were doing (in that your purpose wasn't privacy invasion nor malicious acts). And even more so, the law often takes the worse of two evils when there are multiple evils going on (as a practical matter). Plus the offended party would be the scammers themselves, who are almost certainly in India (based on their obvious accents). So while Paul is worried for me, I would tell him to worry more that some little old lady is going to get scammed by these scammers. |

I just got a scam call from Dell Technical Support
The New Other Guy said:
Reporting such a call is even MORE of a waste of time than what was already wasted. The scammers AREN'T in the US, and can not be tracked, unless you're ready with the right equipment WHEN they are on-line. I have to agree with you in that I *did* call the FTC at 877-382-4357 this morning and I also filed a complaint at their FTC site. I told them I had a 50-minute 95Mbyte wav recording if they want it, and the guy said nobody ever offered them that. He kept repeating (over and over) to almost all my questions that they take into account the number of people who complain more than the actual details of the complaint. So I basically wasted my time offering to give them the recording. All they seem to care about are the *number* of complaints. The only information they really need is the telephone number of who contacted you (e.g., I gave them the 8004252067 number as their dumb form didn't take dashes or parenthesis) and what they said "This is Dell Technical Support calling you to tell you that your computer has too many services running"). That's all they really need, or even want as you don't even have to give them your name or contact information. They just seem to care about the *number* of complaints, and that's it. |
