Default Outlook 2016 OST question

As far as I can tell, the OST does not contain the user's
contacts or tasks, just their eMail.

You've already got all the email on the IMAP server, why try to
duplicate that on a local machine? Contacts can be held on an IMAP
file too, don't know about tasks.

How do yo get Outlook 2016 to open a PST instead of
an OST with an iMap account to start with?

One way, create the PST file, ensure the account uses it as it's data
file.

Hi Dave,

I usually do this by going into control panel, mail and
creating a data file based on the PST file. I couldn't this
time as the pst file was corrupted.

My question though was how to force a new PST instead of
an OST (when using iMap).

Create a new PST.

Add (ie re-add) a new (e-mail) account, and when doing that, *pick* the
PST file.

I imagine that a distinct dissadvantage of doing this, is that like O
2010 and earlier, you'll have a messy folder tree on the left - given
you'll have *the* account, *and* the PST tree.

(Maybe that's why MS did it the OST way?)

What I noticed was if you create a new email account, you
get an ost, like it or not.

If you have an OST that is not corrupted, you can export
contacts and tasks. iMap handles the eMail. But if
yo come across a corrupted OST, then swearing is permitted.

I really do wish folks would stop using Outlook. Thunderbird
is so, so much easier to maintain. And it distributes its data, instead
of rolling it up in one YUGE file.

Interesting. I have never seen that. This last customer certainly
didn't.

You can pick an alternative data file (including a PST file) in the
creation process. Do the manual setup, POP/IMAP...

I setup Thunderbird yesterday. What a POS. I changed the awful
behaviour of opening messages in tabs to opening in a new window. Cool.

But a showstopper is being unable to get the message marked as read if
you open it. It's all based around the preview - either instantly
previewed or a timer on previewing length. That's bloody terrible!

Outlook is also way superior in functionality - no question there. And
I think it's far more elegant.

But I'm not gonna have an Outlook vs. Thunderbird debate.

It isn't preview in Tb; it is showing in the message pane or not.

You can disable the message pane function. Toggle with F8 (View/ Layout/
Message pane).

That way your message won't get marked as read for appearing in the
message pane and will be based solely on your opening it in a window as
your preference over a tab.

You can toggle the preview pane off, yep (you can call it the message
pane if you like).
Then, when you double-click and open a message, it is *not* marked as
read!

Or... there is no way to have messages not marked as read, with the
preview/message pane visible. If you turn off that setting to mark the
message as read in Preferences, Advanced, Automatically mark messages as
read. Then opening them doesn't mark them as read either.

The "message" pane is a bloody *preview* pane all day!

So the only reasonably way to run it, is to have no preview pane (handy,
but oh well), and turn back on automatically mark messages as read, so
they will be so when opened in a window.

Hopeless conundrum! One wants a preview. Leave the read status alone.
Upon opening, mark it as read.

I'll say it again, it's a *preview* pane all day - Mozilla needs to take
that onboard.

I think it's a showstopper - the program's basically unusable!

It does for me.

I reconfigured to be:

Message pane off.

Display/ Advanced/ Reading: Automatically mark messages as read,
Immediately on display

Open messages in a new message window

When I had opened a message in that fashion, it was marked as read in
the thread pane.

That being said, I much prefer MY usual configuration to use the message
pane and to not open messages in a separate tab or window.

Then there needn't be some mechanism for closing the generated reading
message windows or tabs.

Alpine. Built for imap.

I like the way Alpine handles its configuration. It is cross-platform
for Mac, Win, Linux and also Nokia. The wp gives it these kudos:

"Unlike other console applications targeting developers and experienced
users, which often require users to edit a configuration file, Alpine
lets users change most configuration options within the software. This
makes alpine one of the most easy to learn console-based email clients."

I've experimented with Alpine as a newsreader, but not email.
