Default Dimming screen and Sleep options

Yet another question on my HP 4540s Win 7 Pro SP1. The computer screen
used to dim after 10 min. and go into sleep mode after 30 min. of non
use. These parameters were set in the HP Power Assistant. Awhile back
this all changed, no matter what I set in the Power Assistant there is
no change to screen brightness or sleep activity. I can dim the screen
manually or put the system to sleep using the fn + f1 keys and it awakes
just fine pressing the power key. Any ideas for a cure for this, the
security windows updates are up to date, running Microsoft Essentials
and a wireless Bluetooth mouse. Probably a dumb question but I am a loss.

Have you checked settings in Control Panel / Power Options?

Yes, I have checked the setting there and they are the same as I have
set in the HP Power Assistant.

Next thing I would check would be anything that prevents power down or sleep:
USB may be keeping the comp alive, device manager: check USB root hubs and devices for
wake comp under power management. Same for network card, and anything else that uses
power management.

Disconnect all USB devices (all of them except for keyboard and mouse if
they connect via USB), reboot, and retest.

Toggle the power saver settings away from their current settings, reboot
Windows, and set them back to their original settings. Sometimes the
settings shown are not honored but toggling them gets them recognized.

Does the HP Power Assistant remain loaded after you apparently have
exited it? Is it a service process or a program? If it stays resident,
you may have to uninstall the HP program to ensure it is not interfering
with the settings shown in Windows 7's own power settings.
