Printing does seem odd on Linux. I can print MOST things, but have found a

in COLA. It is running off a USB drive on a USB 2 port.

Still, the printing never did work.

I did get the association to work -- deleted some files tied to it and then
it worked fine. Why that failed? Don't know. Works fine in a VM I use.

I don't like Chrome, prefer Firefox and SeaMonkey, but I installed Chromium
and went to your recipe page and here is the print results both on a networked
antique HP LaserJet 2100 and to a newer HP LaserJet Pro 400c

Did you open that in ImageMagick and print from there? It has the same flaws
I showed from there... and, of course, that is not the best tool for opening
a PDF.

issues (though not as bad). But it is odd why it will not print that one
recipe... does print everything else we have tossed at it (which is not
much).

Did get the association issue resolved.

There seems to be that handful that just cannot mange to get anything to
work. Unfortunately they tend to have an inversely proportional
relationship to willingness to receive help to volume of whining...

Irrelevant. If the port is blocked in the firewall, your printer
will not be seen

I unblocked it as you suggested (at the time) and it didn't help. I'm
actually willing to get it to work because as every day passes, I am
getting off the fence and moving toward the Linux camp (despite your
constant attacks and overall rotten personality). Frankly, I think I
can live without the printer and wouldn't mind upgrading it but I'd
like for it to work in the meantime if possible.

I became active in the advocacy group a while back and as such I saw
that thread and made a video, which I posted to YouTube which shows my
experience with the issue, which is I had no issue.

I didn't scan a copy of the printed output and post that as you did. But
I can simply tell you it came out flawlessly. I think you might already
know that I have been using Qoppa PDF Studio Pro for a couple years on
the recommendation of someone here, I forgot who. If I had any such
problems with PDFs I would have mentioned it. And I have been buying
that software since version 9.

The op set up less than ideal circumstances in which to conduct his
testing. For one thing, he's using a ten year old Mac and the OS is
installed on a USB thumb drive. With only one NAND it is likely that the
lack of a good NAND controller causes periodic IO hangs which are
acceptable in a file copy process, but less than ideal in a operation of
an operating system. And so I wouldn't give any credence to this.

My wife has moved to Linux full time on her computer (though she also uses
one of my daughters using her own account). We also have printing issues --
though they seem less severe than yours.

Really only one print job will not work -- and then if we save to PDF and
print from that it works fine. Odd.

No I printed directly from the browser to the printers, that is what you
said you could not do. That image is a scan of the first page of both
outputs. Now for PDF, I printer to PDF from the browser and here is the
resulting PDF:

Also tail /var/log/syslog and /var/log/cups/error_log while trying to
setup printer and see what errors occur realtime...

Again most likely a firewall and|or network configuration issue. Don't
have that model but when my son was still living here had no problem
whatsoever connecting to his CLP-300N.

Oh this is kind of funny. I do own a Samsung color laser, model CLP-315
and I can confirm it works on EVERY Linux distribution I have tried.

See his post about printing an online recipe. Not sure how some folks
manage to encounter such problems?

Marek went to show it ... and then used a different recipe and STILL had
issues (though not as bad). But it is odd why it will not print that one
recipe... does print everything else we have tossed at it (which is not
much).

Did get the association issue resolved.

There seems to be that handful that just cannot mange to get anything to
work. Unfortunately they tend to have an inversely proportional
relationship to willingness to receive help to volume of whining...

Hey, if anyone has a suggestion on how to resolve it I would love to see it.


Don't know I did not have any issue whatsoever as the scanned printouts
I showed as evidence.

With yours, though, you do have the same spacing issues I show in the
conversion to an image by ImageMagick.

Odd you would have that... or is that one from ImageMagick and the other a
direct print? The top one looks fine.

I didn't scan a copy of the printed output and post that as you did. But

know that I have been using Qoppa PDF Studio Pro for a couple years on

The op set up less than ideal circumstances in which to conduct his
testing. For one thing, he's using a ten year old Mac and the OS is
installed on a USB thumb drive. With only one NAND it is likely that the
lack of a good NAND controller causes periodic IO hangs which are
acceptable in a file copy process, but less than ideal in a operation of
an operating system. And so I wouldn't give any credence to this.

Well, the conversion to PDF did odd stuff... which we see in the top
printout on yours (top layer, not top of the image you share).

Well I went to the SAME page as he did and in addition to printing to two
network HP printers I have printed the page using the "to PDF" option:

So one printout worked fine and the other did not? Was it converted to an
image to print? Very odd.

Looks just fine to me!

Look at the "How To Make" text at the top of each page. One has significant
spacing issues... much like the ones I saw when ImageMagick converted it.

What you show says this error sometimes happens with printing, too.

Any idea why?
