To get rid of Windows defender, you need to install something called
"Linux". There is ample evidence that it removes it completely and
you'll have a full functional machine to troll these newsgroups.

I suggest ask people in Linux newsgroups how to go about doing this.

Well, of course not.

It's not "that kind" of an AV product.

Unfortunately, it's part of "White Hat culture" to not, under
any circumstances, to explain the defenses of products like
this. The Black Hats already have a pretty good idea how
it works, but the Black Hats will also laugh in the White Hats
faces when the White Hats explain stuff, so it's just better
for the White Hats to not explain anything about the product.
(I remember a certain conversation about rootkits, where
there was much laughter from a certain tier of Black Hat
amateurs. I can see how that would be annoying.)

As a consequence, we cannot really be "informed consumers".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malwar...%28software%29

"Malwarebytes (formerly known as Malwarebytes Anti-malware) is
primarily a scanner that scans and removes malicious software, including

rogue security software \
adware \___ somehow, doesn't seen a full list.
spyware / we need more protection than this.

Malwarebytes scans in batch mode, rather than scanning all files opened,
reducing interference

if another on-demand anti-malware software === expects a "partner"

is also running on the computer.
"

As a consumer, you're expected to now guess what kind of
a software it is, and install a second item to complete
the list of protections.

*******

My guess is, by not using the protocol and disabling Windows Defender,
MalwareBytes is relying on WD to "be its partner" and do the stuff
it doesn't do. If a replacement for WD comes along, it will
switch off WD and continue to be the "partner" to MalwareBytes.

That's the best I can do to explain it, as there's no guarantee
of an authoritative description somewhere. (I'm talking about
the developers verifying how it works, not about "some guy
in a forum telling you to install this or that". There will
always be guys to tell you stuff like that.)

Use a Virtual Machine program like ToolWiz's Freeze Time (freebie) and
you won't have all those nonsense problems caused by the present day
AVs and "Internet Security" programs.

I'm not techie enough for that. Any idea how to remove or disable Windows
Defender?

There may be a piece of free software that in technically not free. I

am with Bellsouth ATT. As part of my ISP subscription they provide a
free copy of McAfeee, SO I have McAfee on my computers. I know other
ISP provide Norton and other name brand antivirus programs.

I believe the Firewall has an on/off control.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html

*******

Since I had Win10 Pro, I could use Option 6 here.
In Win10 1903, I had trouble with Option 1, so went
with Option 6 instead. I judge the success of the operation
by how much CPU is wasted. MsMpEng continues to run,
so it really doesn't "stop" as such - it's just
"less of a pig" when you do this.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html

and I use that method, to accelerate some maintenance activity
on the computer. If MsMpEng happens to scan everything
that the SearchIndexer turns over with its shovel, we
can't put up with that, and switching off RealTime protection
means fewer sacks of crap are slowing down the computer. I
don't need to do this on my "real" install on the SSD,
but the Win10 I run in a VM on top of a Core2 Duo, is
too slow for words, and the only viable option there
is to turn off WD. This is also (partly) a fault of
the VM hosting software.

*******

I'm exhausted with this already. Thanks for all the information. Under a lot
of stress here at home so this isn't the best time to be trying to work on
these 2 LTs.

Install an live, online, antimalware system, such as Kaspersky or Avast
or even McAfee or Norton. (Note: I do not recommend McAfee or Norton.)
Live systems scan your email, etc. on a live basis looking for what they
feel is malware. Offline systems, such as MalwareBytes, only scan on
demand. A live system, on being installed, will turn off Windows
Defender, or, rather, Windows Defender will detect it and turn itself
off. (Which suggests an interesting way to introduce malware, actually.
One wonders if Microsoft has thought of it. One doubts it. Microsoft is
not bright.) Offline systems will not cause Windows Defender to turn
itself off.

If you think that you need a firewall, that would require you to get a
system which includes a firewall. Serious 'security' systems will
include a firewall. Installing them will turn off the Windows firewall
as well as Windows Defender.

Please note that the intersection between cheap/free on the one hand and
actually worth a damn on the other is extremely small. Be prepared to
spend money, usually on an annual basis.

This machine is a company machine and has enterprise-level antimalware,
paid for by the company.

If you don't want to pay, seriously consider moving to Mac or Linux. The
malware threat level there is far lower than on Windows.

Simply install another AV program. That will disable (not remove)
Defender.

No, it doesn't work that way. I downloaded Malwarebytes and it did not
disable Windows Defender.

Malwarebytes disables Windows Defender on first instal.
MWB installs the full version as a trial then reverts to an on demand
scanner.
I had to manually re-enable Windows Defender after the trial ended.

That's not Windows Defender.

It says it's Windows Defender. I want to get rid of it. How do I get the
damn WD software off my 2 LTs? There is no way to make it return or
release something it claims is a visus. I don't need this aggravation.
There is nothing about permissions. Nothing about administrators. I can
click for it to allow the thing it calls a virus but nothing happens.

You're talking about the basic permissions model being
used by the OS. The file system is NTFS, not FAT32.
It has permissions up the wazoo.

This is not Windows 98, never will be.

And that's the curse of modern OSes, the
"computer science degree" requirement.
The web page may say "1GB RAM, 3GHz CPU",
but what they don't mention is "and a
CS degree does not hurt".

Normally, the IT department would help you out
of a bind, but that isn't a practical answer
for home users.

In this case, Defender doesn't actually get in
the way. It just wastes cycles. UAC puts up dialog
boxes, but they don't really stop you either. However,
the file system permissions model *will* stop you.
Program Files is owned by Trusted Installer. Different
folders are using different accounts.

How do I remove Windows Defender from my 2 laptops? I see nothing about
permissions in WD.

To explain every possible aspect of Permissions,
takes a small book. The explanation is that lengthy,
and the convenience tools... aren't convenient either.
Any tool that "helps with permissions", just
displays all the permissions and then says
"what would you like to do?". And that's really no help
at all. There's no "get out of my way" button :-/ Sorry.

So there is no way to get rid of Windows Defender and it's firewall?

I would suggest finding a way to limit where it searches/scans to JUST
an empty directory. that'll fix it!

Not on my version of W-10. I have to do it manually. I found some info on
the net that fit my version of 10. But on reboot MS WD is again turned on.
There doesn't seem any way to disable it permanently.

Malwarebytes doesn't stop WD from restarting on reboot.

The LTs are all HPs. McAfee came on them and when clicked on says it's not
available on Windows-10. Makes me wonder why it comes on W-10 PCs.

From what I see there is very little control over Windows Defender. You
can't even tell it to Return or Release or Ignore what it grabs and removes.

I think you're misunderstanding what several people have been saying.

1. If you install another AV program, WD will disable itself and stay
disabled unless/until you remove the other AV program.

2. The reason that MalwareBytes doesn't cause WD to disable itself is
because MalwareBytes is *not* an AV program.
