I would suggest finding a way to limit where it searches/scans to JUST an
empty directory. that'll fix it!

From what I see there is very little control over Windows Defender. You

Absolute rubbish.

Try the settings tab where you will find options to:
.. Turn on/off Real Time Protection
.. Exclude files & location
.. Exclude file types
.. Exclude processes
.. Scan archive files/removable drives
etc.
History tab/View details button
.. Remove/restore Quarantined files

Simply install another AV program. That will disable (not remove)
Defender.

No, it doesn't work that way. I downloaded Malwarebytes and it did not
disable Windows Defender.

Yes it does. Malware Bytes is *not* an AV program.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not on my version of W-10. I have to do it manually. I found some info on
the net that fit my version of 10. But on reboot MS WD is again turned on.
There doesn't seem any way to disable it permanently.
Malwarebytes doesn't stop WD from restarting on reboot.
I think you're misunderstanding what several people have been saying.
1. If you install another AV program, WD will disable itself and stay
disabled unless/until you remove the other AV program.
2. The reason that MalwareBytes doesn't cause WD to disable itself is
because MalwareBytes is *not* an AV program.
Thanks for saving me the trouble of posting the same reply.
Using the executable named "winver" can tell you what
version of OS you're running. It's because there are
a bunch of versions, we cannot tell you with any accuracy,
what you'll see on some random settings page. It's
hard to nail down without specifics.
https://i.postimg.cc/SsgYczGx/window...-adventure.gif
Use the download original button on Postimg, if you cannot
make out the details in the image. That is a pretty big GIF.
Lots of white space, which is a Windows 10 specialty.
Try entering the name of a subsection in a search,
to get there faster.
How do I remove Windows Defender from my 2 laptops? I see nothing about
permissions in WD.
The version of Windows Defender on my LTs doesn't look like this at all and
doesn't have those choices under settings. Perhaps this shows an older
version and no longer applies to the newer ones that come on Windows-10.
All I have under Settings is Notifications and Security Providers. So I
couldn't follow it past that point.
I have version 1903 of Windows-10. I still can't find these choices in WD.
Turn on/off Real Time Protection doesn't work. It's not clickable for
example and nothing about Remove/restore Quarantined files etc. This is by
far the worst anti-scumware I ever had to deal with and I can't get rid of
it. The info online isn't really helpful because it doesn't match the
version on my LTs. I still can't locate "Remove/restore Quarantined files."
I really want this WD off my computers. What free anti-virus shuts it off
or disables it? Would you know?
Version 1903 Build 18362.295 for what that's worth. WD is probably
different on all the versions and builds.
The images don't match my version but were close enough to find the turn off
thing which is grayed out so WD can't be shut off temporarily to install
something. Is there anyway around this problem or do we lose the use of our
computers to a certain degree because MS is trying to protect us?
Maybe this is Windows 10 Home that has these things
grayed out ?
I was able to turn off Real Time Protection in 1903, by
doing two things.
Turning off Tamper Detection.
Using GPEDIT to turn off Real Time Protection.
That seems to work, whereas the toggle in the GUI
doesn't work reliably. You might check back in a
few minutes and see CPU being wasted again. But
with the GPEDIT to turn it off, that worked.
It seems I *did* install a Windows 10 Home (perhaps in a VM)
to test this out. You can see the settings I was playing with, here.
https://i.postimg.cc/3NBpbVnN/kasper...sc-regedit.gif
TamperProtection DWORD 0
DisableAntiSpyware DWORD 1 # needed to add this key
The offline registry editor I was using, cannot edit all
registries, so there are limits. But at least permissions
won't be a problem. That's why you use an editor like that one
(less back-talk).
To ask a stupid sounding question...
Would using a standard user account versus an administrator's account
cause this?
Maybe, but with Home, they're "mean" just in principle.
They don't need an excuse.
