Tip: workgroup printer
HI All,
I got called to a customer's site this week to install a new computer and remove a broken one. The customer's printer repairman recommended the HP Laser Jet M507 I was impressed: It was easy to install and lighter weight than your would think (it is not light though, watch your back). It was ridiculously easy to configure and network. CUPS caught it immediately. It is quiet. Prints very quickly. I hold an entire ream of paper. Keep in mind this is a new unit. I have not idea what the last is on it. -T |

It may be a very good printer, but there are lots of other good monochrome laser printers for a *lot* less money. I'm very happy with my Brother HL-L2300D, which is $80. -- Ken |

My Okidata c5150n weighs about 70 lbs, Cost me $715.00, OEM toner costs a fortune, About $700.00 for a set of four CMYK carts. but I don't buy those, I get Media Sciences brand new, not rebuilt 5000 page set of 4 carts for $140.00, they last me about 2 years or so. The printer is going on 13 years old without a problem and still uses the original drivers even in Windows 10. I guess you get what you pay for. I suspect it may outlast me. :-) Rene |

Yes, way too much for a monochrome printer, that's more than the price of a good color printer. my son has a Brother monochrome model 2500 or something, does a great job for $99.00. Rene |

You also have to look at the monthly yield, not only the per minute speed. A printer might print fast, but then it would die early if it has to print thousands of pages per month in an office. There are also different types of offices: some may need to print maybe a hundred per day or less, others a thousand per day. Just print 3 or 4 copies of each contract in a law firm that completes several contracts a day, for instance, plus drafts :-P however, it's *way* overkill for a home user and even a small business. But would it last ten times as long. I doubt it. probably longer, given that its recommended duty cycle is 7500 pages per month, with a maximum of 150k pages per month. that's a *lot* of printing. And at those prices for cartridges, the cost is more than 10 times as much. for roughly 7-8x as many pages per cartridge. 700-2600 pages per cartridge for the brother 5k-20k pages per cartridge for the hp |

You also have to look at the monthly yield, not only the per minute speed. A printer might print fast, but then it would die early if it has to print thousands of pages per month in an office. Yes. But would it last ten times as long. I doubt it. A good departmental printer can last 20 years, doing 100k pages or more per month in that time. A personal printer, such as the Brother, would have a duty cycle of approximately 30,000 pages/month, and would simply break down if fed 100k pages/month for more than 3 to 6 months. We don’t hit 100k, but have exceeded 50k on multiple occasions and one memorable month we printed in excess of 75k. We have a few 20-year-old HP departmental printers, from when HP made good printers. We’d have killed a personal printer years ago. They have been in service since 1997-9, so 20+ years. They’re now slow and don’t have good resolution compared to new printers, but they still work. I can get 5000 pages off one cartridge (which means we go few a _lot_ of cartridges/month, and so have a volume deal and don’t pay retail. I’ve got a Brother HL-2070N at home, but it hasn’t printed 20,000 pages in 15 years of use as I simply no longer print that much at home. Getting an HP departmental printer for home use would be overkill. Getting a personal printer for the department would be a good way of ensuring that we’d have to buy another printer within a few months. And at those prices for cartridges, the cost is more than 10 times as much. If you buy in volume the price per cartridge falls to a fraction of the price per single cartridge. We pay $50/cartridge if we order 100 or more cartridges; the price for just one cartridge is $100. At 5000 pages/cartridge, that’s $0.01/page for toner, hardly exorbitant, the paper will cost more, for good paper anyway. Cheap paper, suitable for drafts, costs less, again if bought in bulk, which we do. YMMV. There are also different types of offices: some may need to print maybe a hundred per day or less, others a thousand per day. Just print 3 or 4 copies of each contract in a law firm that completes several contracts a day, for instance, plus drafts :-P however, it's *way* overkill for a home user and even a small business. Anyone who doesn’t buy paper in pallets probably doesn’t need a departmental printer. Anyone who does buy paper in pallets badly needs high-end printers, which we also have, big monster floor-standing copier/printers with a half dozen paper trays and duty cycles in the hundreds of thousands... and prices in the high thousands. Usually :-) |

You try that with your $80 printer and you will be going through a printer every two weeks. And a workgroup printer is expected to be repairable and last about ten years. Hi Ken, You missed the part about it being a "workgroup" printer. Its being a workgroup printer is irrelevant. There are large workgroups and there are small workgroups. And some workgroups print much more than others do. This is not for a desktop that goes through a ream of paper a year. It is for folks that go though "two cases" of paper a week. That, on the other hand, could be relevant. However you said nothing about that in your original message that I replied to. You try that with your $80 printer and you will be going through a printer every two weeks. And a workgroup printer is expected to be repairable and last about ten years.
