Virus protection for XP

I tried downloading and installing McAfee VirusScan 7.0
to replace the free trial version and ran into massive

And do I have to remove all traces of the trial version
of McAfee from my computer in order to install a new

Since I am a novice at navigating thru the innards of my
computer, do instructions come with a virus protection if
I go to a retail store and buy one instead of trying to
download it?
