Default Virus protection for XP

Norton AV 2002 or 2003 works fine.

I tried downloading and installing McAfee VirusScan 7.0
to replace the free trial version and ran into massive
problems and was told by McAfee that was the wrong
version. Can someone tell me what is the best virus
protection to buy, not necessarily McAfee. Is Norton
better? And what version is acceptable with WindowsXP?
And do I have to remove all traces of the trial version
of McAfee from my computer in order to install a new
version, whether McAfee or another brand?
Since I am a novice at navigating thru the innards of my
computer, do instructions come with a virus protection if
I go to a retail store and buy one instead of trying to
download it?
