Download the latest Opera browser, In my own opinion, it is a better browser
than most I have seen, since download of files are streamlined and comes w/a
free pop-up blocker you can set yourself, though it is not friendly w/sites
tailor made to IE, which is a small price to pay for free stuff.
http://www.opera.com/

Mozilla and Netscape also has built in pop-up blockers aswell... and I
believe it may have the same problems plauging Opera in terms of sites that
are tailor made for IE.
Mozilla: http://www.mozilla.org/ , Netscape: http://www.netscape.com/

Also download the free firewall software from ZoneLabs, I find this better
and resource friendly than most firewall programs I have used in which I
have to pay for.
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

With this in mind, you now have 4 free choices of popup blockers at your
disposal, to use only one, or in conjuction w/all 4.

Use a free version, such as PopUpStopper - www.panicware.com.

Default pop up ads

Greetings --

This particular "sales method" is strikingly similar to the
"protection" rackets offered to small businesses by organized
criminals. No reputable business would resort to such tactics.
Particularly since they're trying to sell you a type of protection
that is already available to you free of charge.

This a type of spam has become quite common over the past few
months, and unintentionally serves as a valid security "alert." It
demonstrates that you haven't been taking sufficient precautions while
connected to the Internet. Your data probably hasn't been compromised
by these specific advertisements, but if you're open to this exploit,
you may well be open to other threats. Install and use a decent,
properly configured firewall. (Disabling the messenger service, as
some people recommend, only hides the symptom, and does nothing to
secure your machine.) And ignoring or just "putting up with" these
messages and the problem they represent is particularly foolish.

How pray tell does a firewall prevent Pop-ups. Pop-ups
only occur when surfing a site and are not an attempt to
take over your OS or to make changes to it. The XP
firewall is one of the best there is and makes your
computer virtually invisible to anyone looking to hack
into your OS. Pop-Ups are not hacking attempts. You see
when clicking a Universal Resource Locater you are
effectively signing an electronic agreement to allow the
site to activate pop-ups through various methods as a
means of advertising to pay for the site. I am using a
rather old program but one that is the most effective and
that is one that places around 5 thousand DNS suffixes in
windows\system32\drivers\etc file and then pop-ups won't
happen as when your system is checked it effectively says
you already have the pop up so it isn't loaded. Good luck.

You may have spyware on your machine (unless these ads come through MS
messenger).
Download and run Spybot search and destroy from http://security.kolla.de

There are different types of pop-ups. The OP's complaint
is about messenger service abuse, not site-specific
pop-up ads. Bruce's advice is correct, and you need to
get with the program before contradicting correct answers
with your ignorant drivel.

Er, well I'm sure that "The rev XP" will be along soon to make comments, but
I would just like to ask: exactly where did the OP make any reference to
Messenger?
And why are you being so abusive?

Unfortunately, some people here, such as Testy, (or is it Lewis today?), are
just abusive by nature.

I've been using Crazy Browser for at least half a year now. It is far
more stable that IE, even though it uses alot of the same interface.
Once you've browsed the web with tabs you will never use anything
else. Oh and the fact is I never get those annoying popups anymore.
Even on warez or crack sites, which really like to hammer you with
java laced garbage.

Cheers
Paul

The OP made no direct reference to messenger service ads.
But he *did* say that the had to clear 156 of them, and
he suggested that some of the ads were trying to sell him
something that would stop them. This means only one thing:
messenger service abuse. If you take a moment to actually
read the posts and make a modest attempt to interpret
what is being asked, you will not have to embarrass
yourself by asking stupid questions.
As for my alleged abusiveness, I referred to the response
as "ignorant drivel" because that is what it was. If you
consider an accurate description of the quality of the
post to be abuse, then *mea culpa*.

*You* don't seem to be able to read, you muppet.
The first question I asked was "exactly where did the OP make any reference
to Messenger?" I do not see this as a stupid question, the OP made *no
reference* to messenger. You *assumed* messenger because the OP was getting
pop-up ads. I do not think messenger is the only way to get pop-up ads. Look
around this newsgroup, LOTS of people complain about this sort of
advertising and they are NOT all caused by messenger. You think messenger
has a monopoly on this?

Your "alleged abusiveness": What you saw as "ignorant drivel" was somebody
helping somebody else. If you see this as "ignorant drivel", then this tells
me and everybody else here, what sort of person you are. The fact that you
don't even see it as abuse, speaks volumes.
Muppet.
