Default disk space in NTFS drives

I have 3 hard drives, all NTFS formatted. All of them
claim to have less free hard disk space then they should,
as well as more files. I am missing about 9 gb of space
on each of them.

I have tried everything in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;315688.
but could not solve the problem.

chkdsk and drive properties agree with each other about
the inflated used space, while trying the properties
after sellect all gives the lower number.

I am the sole user of this computer, therefore there
should not be any problem with permissions. also I dont
not use quota management so there should not be any
problem with that. chkdsk /F failed to find a problem
with the MFT and it is only 5 mb in size.

I do not know what else to try. can anybody help?

Enable Show Hidden Files and Folders -Start, Control Panel, Folder =
Options, View.

Extract from post earlier today by R. McCarty in another group, which is =
relevant:

Your C: Drive also contains the following, you may not be
aware of.

Pagefile.Sys - Probably in the range of 1.5 Gigabytes
Hiberfil.sys - A hibernation file also 1+ Gigabytes
System Restore - A fixed % of the drive (Around 10%)
Recycle Bin - A fixed % of the drive
Offline Files - Cached into C:\Windows\CSC
IE Cache - Probably set to 100+ megabytes (should be
Purged, set to 35 Megabytes max.
Temp Folders - Need to be purged. C:\Windows\Temp

These files are hidden by default.=20

Thx, but I already enable hidden and system files. also
that would not explain the many GBs missing from my other
drives (d and G) last time I checked G had almost 18 gbs
missing.

I just cant explain that.

Can you detail the size and free space for each hard drive. Can you then =
give the information for one hard drive in the way illustrated in =
Article 315688 in section headed "The cluster size is too large" so we =
can see how the calculations are revealing missing disk space.

What tool was used to format the hard disks?

Default disk space in NTFS drives

c: total capacity 37.2 GB
select - all properties:
size : 22.0 GB
size on disk : 22.0 GB
drive properties:
Used space 35.3 GB

d: TC 42.9 GB
select - all properties:
size :31.7 GB
size on disk : 31.8GB
drive properties:
Used space 39.2 GB

g: TC 111 GB
select - all properties:
size : 62.2 GB
size on disk : 62.3 GB
drive properties:
Used space 83.6 GB

The first two were formatted by the win xp setup disk,
the third was formatted by the WD tool to format large
harddrives. they are each from a different manufactuere.
they were fine after the format. I have a feeling that
files aren't really being deleted though.

I had exactly the same problem recently. My values were almost 4Gb out!! I
put it down to downloading a large amount of ~700Mb files on Kazaa which was
defragmenting my hard drive drastically. One run of the windows defrag
utility brought everything back to as it should be, so give it a try!
