Proliferation of "Documents and Settings" directories in WinXP
Gary Lotto wrote:
When I typed them in the "Run" box, it brought up a Windows Explorer screen (without the tree on the left) that seemed to be pointing to "Gary" and to "All Users.WINDOWS". Do you think I can trust this? I think so. For additional safety check the date stamps of the folders. "Gary" should have the newest date for all "Gary-related" folders, "All Users.Windows" the newest date for all the "All users-related" folders. -- (tm) |

Proliferation of "Documents and Settings" directories in WinXP
Thank you, Thorsten, for your advice. With it, I was able to remove
several directories and several "personalities" that had somehow erroneously been created. Nonetheless, over the year or so I have been using it, my "Documents and Settings" directories have multiplied to: ADMINI~1 All Users All Users.WINDOWS Gary Gary Lotto Gary Lotto.GLOTTOMICRON GARYLO~1~GLO Owner Which of these can I get rid of, and how can I prevent them from coming back? At a DOS prompt type %userprofile% You will run into an error message that lists the current user profile folder. You can delete all other Gary Lotto-related folders after you have made sure that they do no longer contain data that you want to keep. Such data should be copied to the current user profile folder before. Then type %allusersprofile% at the DOS prompt to find out if ALL USERS or ALL USER.WINDOWS is to keep. Delete the useless folder. Note: you may have to log on as the Administrator to be able to delete the folders. See "A Description of the Safe Boot Mode Options in Windows XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315222). Is there some clean way I can get the materials from one of these directories into the one (or several) I am going to keep, other than just straightforward copying? Copying is a proper way to take over the data. |

I might have missed it, Thorsten...but how do you keep this from re-occuring? The proliferation, that is? Vic |
