Default xp problem

Try running Disk Defragmenter. It can be found off Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools.

When a HDD gets deeply fragmented, the system will slow down and this may be
the cause of your problem.

I have Professional XP (upgraded from Home XP) on a Compaq presario 700
laptop. Since yesterday morning I am having a strange and frustrating
problem with my system.

When I click on some icon to start the program, it just wont start .. If I
click like 20 times continuously then it will start eventually (After
taking
a lot of time) - but then all the 20 clicks will start 20 applications
running.

I dont know what to do - There is nothing that I did that should give this
problem.

Can anyone suggest some remedies that I can try?

Thanks,
KL.
