Default - Make OE load MSN Messenger instead of Windows Messenger...

Outlook Express automatically loads Windows Messenger when called.

Any way to change that to MSN Messenger? I have both and I hate having both
loaded when OE is called. Actually, if I could turn of ANY messenger loading
when calling OE, that would be fine too.

I would very much like to know this too. I know there is an option in the
tools menu in OE to uncheck automatically run Windows Messenger when running
or something to that effect so my windows messenger doesn't automatically
log on but I wish it would go away period. I have MSN internet service so
MSN messenger automatically logs on once I do.

That's the freaky thing... it was never checked.

It still loads Windows Messenger, even when MSN Messenger is already open.

I'm not sure if this will do it or not but you can try.
In MSN Messenger go to ToolsOptionsGeneral tab. Uncheck the boxes =
for;
Run Messenger when Windows Starts
Allow Automatic signin when connected to the Internet.

That is in MSN Messenger. I am talking about Windows Messenger. Let me state
the problem again.

MSN Messenger loads on boot-up -- this is fine with me. I like having it
open.

When I open OE, however, *WINDOWS* Messenger loads -- but does not connect
to the internet. It just loads and sits in the system tray -- until I close
OE, in which case it goes away again.

Windows Messenger doesn't have a General tab under Options... but I already
unchecked everything that resembles automatic connection.

In both OE and Windows Messenger.

In Outlook Express, under View/Layout, if you have the Display of Contacts
checked, Messenger will start so that it can show you which of your contacts
are online. It's a design flaw in the program. You can disable the display
of Contacts and uncheck the start up of messenger and it should do it.

Also check by clicking Start/Run and type: MSCONFIG then looking on the
Startup tab and uncheck any option for it. (msmsgs.exe)

Default - Make OE load MSN Messenger instead of Windows Messenger...

I answered this to a very similar question below:
"The default for Windows Messenger is to start with Internet Explorer and
Outlook Express. You can turn off Windows Messenger temporarilly by going
to Start, Run and typing "net stop messenger" but you will have to do this
every time Windows XP starts. If you try to uninstall Messenger this will
remove Outlook Express. What to do if you want to uninstall Windows
Messenger but keep Outlook Express? I found the solution at
http://www.ashampoo.com with PowerUp XP. This utility will edit the
registry to start Outlook Express or Internet Explorer without the Windows
Messenger. Then Windows Messenger can be safely removed."
