Default Sound Problems -- Tone Control

I noticed some time after doing a Windows update that I
had no sound coming out of my speakers. When I plug in
headphones, I hear faint, scratchy sound if I turn volume
to max.
I have gone through many, many troubleshoot procedures
but am not sure of the problem.
When I go into volume control everything looks normal
until I go into Advanced. There the Tone Control for
both bass and treble is at the minimum. But it doesn't
let me adjust them --
Can anyone tell me how I can adjust this?
Many thanks in advance.

One of these may tell you what the sound card is.

Aida32:

Belarc Advisor:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Unknown Device Identifier:
http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html

Then look for updated XP drivers for it.

I think I already did that. I tried updating the driver
(got help with the troubleshooter), and got the message
that there are no updates available for the driver. Then
I tried reverting to the last, but nothing happened.
