You can install XP into the virtually the same space as the "screwed"
one was using. It's a choice when installing XP. You WILL have to re-
install some stuff in the program files but stand-alone stuff will be
OK. Can you get into "safe mode"? If so go in and copy your stuff onto
a data stick/external hard drive/partition.

If you can't do the Repair Install, then either you have hardware issues
and/or the operating system is too damaged to salvage. Either boot the
computer with a Linux Live CD (I prefer Knoppix) or pull the drive and
connect it to another working computer. USB drive enclosures or adapters
work well for this. Copy off the data. If you boot the targeted computer with
Linux, you can copy the data to an external hard drive. The advantage to
doing this is twofold: 1) you get your data; 2) if the computer won't run
with Linux you know you have hardware problems.

Assuming you can get your data off (the hard drive is viable enough to do
this), do hardware troubleshooting. Start with testing the hard drive.

If the hardware is good, do a clean install of Windows.

I find Linux to be a big waste of time. Most can't write to NTFS. Linux
can't get into the registry, can't get into the System Restore, can't
run ERUNT, etc. BartPE or WinPE is far better. Also no learning curve
either.

Be careful of Ubuntu Live. It screwed up my XP just by booting it up and
shutting it down. I didn't even access the Windows partition, Ubuntu did
so on its own and modified the registry so Windows would no longer boot.
And somebody else here reported the same as well.

If IE 7 / 8 and Windows Media Player 11, with all the required updates
installed, then YES the repair reinstall will fail. Windows XP and
any slipstreemed updated CDs will have only IE 6 and Windows Media
Player 9 on it. Since there is older software being installed during
the repair, Windows XP will have problems.
