Default Make 12x18" signs at home on 8.5x11" B&W laser printer

Windows sign printing freeware?
Does it exist?

Exact example here uploads.im/YpuVv.jpg
To spray paint plastic sign that are on 12 inches x 18 inches white stock.

Goal is to create a life-sized cutout template on normal 8.5x11" paper.
Then tape template on 12"x18" white plastic stock.
Then spray paint letters of right size with red paint.

If not special sign printing free software is there a trick to print a real
size cutout template with a normal Windows 10 printer of multiple pages of
8.5x11 inch paper taped together by using a trick of some kind?

Plan is to spray paint once I tape the life-sized paper templates over
12x18" plastic stock white boards.

Have you tried any of the online sign-designers? "Design house sign"
under Google gets them. I got mine here;
https://www.designahousesign.com/
Cool! And weathers well.

To get a print of it, I just did a screen-shot.

Thanks for that link Ed, you've made my day :-)
I was looking yesterday for new house numbers at the local diy shed and
couldn't find any I liked so gave up, never thought of looking for
those sort of websites.

There are different ways to go about that. These
days many signs are done with vinyl plotters, to create
adhesive vinyl letters. If you want an oval around
the edge that's a different issue. For that I'd use
an editor like Paint Shop Pro, then enlarge the image
to print templates.

A few years ago I wrote a small program for my
brother who's a sign painter. He never used it much.
He's better at hand-drawing large letters than he
is at using a computer. But it's basically what you're
describing: Enter a character, point size and font.
The program prints it onscreen. It can then be
saved as a BMP or sent to your printer. If you
save it you could also work on it further in a graphic
editor. (Enlarge, paste with other text, etc.)

I just tried it out. A 600pt capital A in verdana
printed about 6" high.

It's free to use if you want it. Nothing special.
It just does the one job of printing characters large:

http://www.jsware.net/Files2/fontpics.zip

Aside from that I don't know of anything. You
might find commercial software, but I don't
think there's much call for non-commercial
sign-making software. And a commercial operation
these days would probably be using vinyl. Once
one has invested in the plotter it saves a lot
of labor.

One trick used for T-shirts and might also work for
your sign:
Design your sign in PAINT, then flip the picture to
get a mirror image.
Print that as deeply colored(or black) as possible.

Then put the print ink down on your sign or T shirt.
and with a very hot iron (often the cotton setting)
iron the paper, which ought to transfer the ink from
the paper to your shirt or sign.
Dont pull off the paper, but dump it with shirt or sign in water.
Leave it for a an hour, then gently brush away the wet paper.

Might give it a try.

Yes. You are right. It's a math problem. Not a design problem.

Powerpoint is perfect for design. Design isn't the problem.

How do I print to 12x18 scale on multiple sheets of smaller 8.5x11 paper?

My only printer is an old HP laser jet.

The printer isn't the problem because I will cut the letters out.

That makes a stencil.

The problem is how to print to 8.5x11 that scales up to 12x18.

I should have been more clear.

The problem is _printing_ to a size which is larger than a sheet of paper.

It's a math problem. Not a design problem.

I don't know how to print 12x18 scale to multiple sheets of 8.5x11 paper?
Do you?

So you mean that you're setting out the content
of the whole sign in PP? If it were me I'd convert
the PP to a BMP, then open that in something like
Paint Shop Pro and size it appropriately for printing.
Maybe 100 ppi? Using that as an example, you
would then resize to 1200 x 1800 pixels. Then cut
that up into multiple images. (4 maybe? You can just
select/paste as new image to get the 4 new images.)
Then print each of those and tape them together.
If necessary you could add faint/tiny edge markers
where you split the images, in order to line them up
accurately.

Be sure to spec the printer resolution when printing.
If that turns out to be tricky, IrfanView is probably
the best overall program for printing on Windows.
IV makes it easy to set print size, print area, etc.

Then I guess you'll need to cut out the characters
for spraying? Maybe put it all on a thin piece of
cardboard first, with spray adhesive or rubber cement.

I assume you need to make a lot of these. Otherwise
probably stick on letters from an art store would be
easier.

Set your page size to custom and enter the size you want.
Word or Publisher will do it if you have one of those.
Or one of these free programs.

Set your page size to custom and enter the size you want. Printing
large posters on small paper will usually put crop marks on the smaller
pieces of paper so you can align them.

Not sure if this would help but use as 11 x 8.5 instead and print half
on each of two papers. You would only lose 1" width and height giving
0.5" borders.

I use PowerPointe to create the sign, and from there, it's trivial to
convert the PowerPointe to anything whatsoever, so the BMP, or GIF, or JPG,
or PDF, or DWX or whatever, isn't a problem at all.

Anyways, I don't have Paint Shop Pro, but I have Irfanview.

Maybe 100 ppi? Using that as an example, you

That's the kind of math I was seaking!

Once it prints to multiple pages, the lining up should be just mechanical.

It might actually be best to print directly to sheets of clear plastic (if
that's possible for a laser printer) because I'll be spray painting these
signs but that's just a detail as the SIZE is the question.

Be sure to spec the printer resolution when printing.
If that turns out to be tricky, IrfanView is probably

I have Irfanview. I think the PPI was the part I didn't understand how to
manipulate.

Then I guess you'll need to cut out the characters

cardboard first, with spray adhesive or rubber cement.

The plan is to print to 8.5x11 paper and thentape it all together, and then
put thin sheets of clear 8.5x11 plastic sheets taped together underneath,
and then cut out the "stencil" with an Exacto knife and then spray the
signs.

Each sign will be different and customized so they'll only be used once.

I assume you need to make a lot of these. Otherwise
probably stick on letters from an art store would be
easier.

Yes. A few dozen. It's really a joke for an eccentric neighbor's 80th
birthday, where we plan on having someone take her to see a movie while we
erect signs all over her yard based on her oddities.

Her birthday is April 15th so we have time, where, right now, we're just
figuring out what humerous jokes we can play on her.

I've heard excellent things about this program, but I haven't used it
myself. Even if you don't use this one, maybe it'll give you some ideas.

I'm posting the Google search results because they include a couple of
Youtube demos in addition to the main link.
