Default "Operating System Not Found"or "Missing operating system"

While surfing the net with several windows open my computer decided to freeze up. So I simply pushed in the power button to do a cold boot. When it came back on I saw the IBM Screen and the next thing I see is a black screen with the words "Operating System Not Found" in the upper left hand corner of this black screen. Can anyone help?
