Failure to copy to second disk
I am using Windows 7 Premium, and have that operating system on two
different computers. I use a program called Casper 7 to clone the boot hard drives to a spare so that if I had a crash I would not lose everything. On the laptop, the program copies the data from the C: partition without a hitch. On the desktop I get a failure when doing so. It says: "The disk you were saving to or the disk used for temporary files is full. Free some space on this disk and try again, or save to a different disk." The program suggests that it might be the Anti Virus program (McAfee) or the Firewall (McAfee) that is preventing the transfer. McAfee is installed on both computers and it is the same version. I have turned off both on the desktop and it still refuses to make the copy to the clone disk. If I boot into Safe Mode on the desktop computer, the software can do the transfer. From this I figure that something is loading in Windows that is preventing the transfer and giving the error message. I looked to see if I could spot something that was loading that could account for the difference, but did not see anything. Does anyone have any ideas what the cause of the error message and failure to copy could be? I looked at the target hard drive and everything looks OK. Again if I clone in Safe Mode the target drive boots just fine without any messages. |

On the rare occasions when I've had problems, I have found their own support people to be fast in responding - http://support.fssdev.com/Main/Default.aspx -- |

VSS not running can also cause problems. I've had instances when Linux based utilities booted from a memory stick or CD was the only "simple" way out. One of my desktops does not have the reserve partition, and the windows 7 pro system somewhere identifies itself as a restored or recovered install. This started as a result of a clone without the reserved partition to an SSD. |

A test will tell you soon enough. There is more on the topic of VSS here. I've never had a problem with space, with respect to backing up stuff. So however much space is allocated, it seems to be enough. I would have thought where the VSS space would get burned up, is if you were writing to the volume while at the same time, backing it up or cloning it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volume_Snapshot_Service For System Restore function (restore points), I turn off all partitions except C:, as I do not want them tracked by System Restore. The purpose of System Restore points, is easy reversion of things like software installs, if absolutely necessary. Paul |
