files lost after install
After figuring out current windows needed a total cleanup, I Installed a
fresh version to a new harddrive. Installation was succesful, but after second boot since installation I saw blue screen wtith the messages saying: "deleting orphan file at ****" or similar (can't remember whole sentence). Most propably windows wanted to chek my drive for errors or similar. Most propably I missed possible information (and possibility to deny it) at the very beginning, where it gives choises to cancel it for some seconds. Anyway I thought it was working on my C-drive where I just installed windows. After Windows finally came up, I found out that it had been working on my other harddrive where I keep documents and media files, and most of them were lost. Instead, there was a found.000 -directory and uner that I found some of the files - although many of them messed up with directory structure or similar. Size of this directory was over 130 GB. Size of this HD is 200 GB. One of my friends told me that the reason was that I had too old windows XP - it didn't have servicepack included. And that this without-service-pack version didn't understand harddrives over 130 GB, which then caused this lost of files and directories. So that is maybe the cause of this, but how to get these files back? I have not changed anything in the drive (not even copied those healthy files under found.000 -tree). I thought of using tools like EasyRecovery or GetDataBack or similar. But does windows have any way to cancel the changes it made (without my given permission!)? I guess thos third party programs can only recover some of the deleted files and it might be a huge job trying to find out which are deleted normally before this happening and which by windows at this happening (the drive was nearly full = 200 GB of files). And I don't know if they can recreate the original structure from Windows-created found.000 -directory strycture. I would guess windows have some log file on what changes it did (and so it could be undone), but where to find it and how to undone the changes? I have no programs installed on my new windows installation, and currently my harddrive is on my second computer where I can run some diagnostic programs. Thank you anybody for help! -Seppo |
