I've always tended to get the tools that did the job best, not buy just a particular brand. In this case, software. Back when I was an active aircraft mechanic, I'd buy the quality tools that did the job, not by name. I own Snap-On, Mac/Matco (there was a company shakeup of some kind that split things), and Cornwell (not too many have heard of them), but no Craftsman. For those that have been around awhile, you know that years ago, Craftsman tools took a dive in quality. Warranty remained the same, quality didn't. We had a new kid fresh out of aircraft mechanics school that gave everyone grief for spending the $$ of the brands I just mentioned. Until he went to use his Craftsman wrenches to remove the cylinders from an engine, and the Craftsman tools were too bulky to fit in the tight spaces available. He quit buying Craftsman. -- Ken Mac OS X 10.8.5 Firefox 25.0 Thunderbird 24.6.0 "My brain is like lightning, a quick flash and it's gone!" |

I'm not a professional mechanic, just someone who does things around the house, so for me, inexpensive tools are usually adequate, but I still get bitten on occasion. My current favorite is the reversible ratchet handle that locks counterclockwise but not clockwise. I've taken it apart and fixed it, but it ended up being a temporary fix. Its accompanying sockets are satisfactory, however, and it's in a nice compact case. Useless but compact :-) -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

Windows 8 and 8.1 Sucks, but Windows 10
Roderick Stewart formulated on Thursday :
On Wed, 29 Oct 2014 16:46:04 -0700, "Ken Blake, MVP" wrote: Is that why about 94% of the world uses Windows? No, that's because most people effectively have no choice. They would if only they realised how easy it was to build a PC yourself, or shop online for something different, but most wouldn't even consider it, so they go to a computer shop to buy something ready built. Unless you want to pay Apple prices Windows is all there is. Linux is a choice for everyone. It's free, and it's quick and easy to replace Windows with it. But how many people know this? And in any case, how much of a real choice is it if, before you install Linux, you have to pay for Windows and then discard it? The choice of a PC with Linux already installed, or a barebones "blank" PC on which you can install your own, is not something that is typically offered, or even hinted at, in computer shops. The reality is that in the high street it's effectively Windows or nothing. If 94% end up with Windows, this is why. The argument that it's the result of some superior property of Windows over the alternatives is specious, because there *are* no alternatives. Rod. When is the last time that you saw any kind of linux advertised? I occassionally see articles about linux but that is about it. Windows on the other hand is a comercial product that has to make a profit. Not the case with linux so it doesn't get pushed. As long as that is true it doesn't matter which system is better. -- Ed Propes |
