How to rid of annoying dialog boxes
I'm a new windows user. In fact I just installed XP on my new iMac. In
learning how to navigate the XP system I can't get rid of the dialog boxes that appear when I click my mouse. If I want to open a window, for example, I click on the icon, but instead of opening the folder or file directly, a box opens with several choices one of which is "open". How do I shut off the boxes? I would also appreciate your guiding me to a website that has a good tutorial on XP for beginners. Rob |

Usually, with a regular mouse, you just double-click an icon to select the default operation, and you have to use the alternate click button, to get that context menu to open. Try a double-click and see if that works. With that unique setup, it may be that you have to toggle a setting to get the click to not open the context menu; you may actually have to read the manual to see how this is accomplished on a Mac. -- Joe =o) |

You are clicking the alternate button (referred to as the right-click because most users have the mouse in their right hand). That brings up the context menu. So use the other mouse button to select/act on the object. |

If you use two buttons, you can go into the Control Panel, Mouse Properties, and reverse the buttons. -- Joe =o) |

: If I want to open a window, for example, I click on the icon, but instead of opening the folder or file directly, a box opens with several choices one of which is "open". How do I shut off the boxes? Are you clicking with the left mouse button? If you click with the right mouse button, Windows gives a context menu such as you describe. If you're clicking the proper button, your mouse may be set up for left-handed use. In Control Panel, open the Mouse applet and change "Button configuration" back to "right handed". -- Stan Brown, Oak Road Systems, Tompkins County, New York, USA http://OakRoadSystems.com/ "If there's one thing I know, it's men.
