I'm trying to test my xp fax and send myself a fax. When the 'monitor'
appears, it keeps saying "Line is busy"...when i know it isn't. Also, I
don't understand what they mean "Dialing rules"?

Are you sending a FAX to the same machine that is sending it on the same line?
If so, you will have a busy signal because your FAX is sending (it can't
simultaneously send and receive). Some telecom providers have a test number
that you can send a FAX to and it responds to your FAX number a few minutes
later automatically, for this to work your FAX number must be entered in the
CSID (TSID) in your FAX machine.
Tony

Sorry, by machine I meant PC and I assume you only have one modem installed.
The only way you can send and receive simultaneously from a PC is if you have
two modems and two telephone lines and some software that supports that
operation.

Thanks Tony, yes I was sending it to myself on the same computer...Its
just that I seem to recall years ago, there was a way of calling
yourself on the same phone to see that its working...I assumed that was
the same way with faxing to yourself. Would you know of one of those
telecom providers that do this? Thanks again.

Sorry Tony, I don't know which country you are in. What I do know is that this
service is not always advertised, you may need to call your telephone provider
and ask them, if you have the patience! The alternative is to find a friendly
local business that will send a FAX to you and you can send one back to them as
a test.

Back before e-mail and web-based support was common, many organizations
provided "fax back" or "fax on demand" systems that allowed you to call,
and using a touchtone phone, enter your fax number and a code indicating
what info you wanted them to fax you.

This one is for New York State tax forms (800) 748-3676. Directions at
http://www.tax.state.ny.us/forms/fax_demand.htm
Or Google for other fax on demand services.

The first version of Microsoft's Fax application (called At Work Fax,
supplied with Windows 95/98/98SE) had a feature where you could send to
yourself. It did NOT involve the modem, only the computer and was devised
to test the application setup. Like many other nice features in this
version, it was removed from Windows 2000 and XP Fax...

Well, I went to that web page and asked for 3 copies of a form from the
tax depart. and it came through, listed as 3 recieved, and yet I was
only able to see the cover page...cannot see the other 2. Why am I
limited to only 1 sheet in this program?

Most likely, this isn't the fax application that's causing your problem,
but the application that you're using to view the received image.

When you view the fax, take a look at the Title Bar of the window (the
one in dark blue, if you're using the default color scheme). It should
show a file name that ends in .tif followed by "Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer" (or perhaps, "Microsoft Office Document Imaging").

If you are using another viewer application, follow the directions here
to reassociate TIF files with Picture & Fax Viewer:
