No microsoft sound when welcome screen appears also not able to use
function keys on XP either

For the function keys: If you have a keyboard with the newer F-Lock key,
this has to be engaged for the function keys to work.

Stuart;
Open Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Sounds tab/scroll down to: "Start
Windows"/Is a sound selected?/use the ? at the top for Help/don't forget to Save
As/Apply/OK.
