Default USB Mass Storage No Longer Recognized

A month ago I had little trouble with my external hard drives showing up with
Windows XP SP2. Now all of a sudden I can't for the life of me get any drives
to show up at all. After playing with pulling out the cables, trying all 12
of the different USB ports I got them to recognize 3 times for about 20
minutes at a time, then they just disappeared never to return. I know the
drives work, and I'm 99% positive that my hardware is fine. I was using these
drives just the other day. It seems like some of the Automatic Updates
through windows have messed something up. I've tried going into device
manager etc but there are no external hard drives listed. Can someone please
help...?
