Default XP Does Not Create A USB Virtual Device When Installing Epson Photo R300

Windows XP SP2
USB2.0

Printer works fine on other XP and MacOS X systems.

When installing an Epson Stylus PhotoR300, the system detects a USB device
but then errors out with a message that says there was a hardware
installation failure, "the specified port is unknown".

Reinstalled USB drivers and removed all old printer drivers. Downloaded the
latest printer driver from Epson and even contacted their tech support who
said it was an OS issue.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Do the USB ports work correctly with other USB devices? Are you using the
same USB cable when you try to install it (successfully) on other PCs?

Yes, I installed a usb DVD recorder and it works fine. I did also try
changing the cable, but the same error occurred. Thanks for the reply, any
other suggestions?
