There is absolutely no difference between 7 and 10 as far as I can see.

You are not looking closely enough.

Automatic forced updates for starters.

Only applies to nutters and idiots. There is no such thing as
"Automatic updates". Never has been!!!!!!!!

I have a friend who had a PC wind Windows 7, woke up one morning and
found 10 on it. Completely automatic.

Well then teach your friend how to block automatic updates on a windows
system. He seems to be a dick head like you and others on these
newsgroups who think Automatic Updates means Automatic. To us Microsoft
word "Automatic" means voluntary in the practical sense!!!!!!!!!!!!.

I keep a backup image of my last known "Good" system, I don't keep data
on the System drive, and I air-gap my data backups.

Even so, I have resorted to disabling a couple of Windows-Update-related
Services over a year ago and that seems to have cured the unasked-for
updates issue for real.

The thing where they changed the effect of the GoAway box to install 10
pushed me over the brink. I lost all trust in Microsoft when they did
that.

I was already using "GWX Control Panel" by then. I did upgrade
(manually) another system running Win 8.1 (which I didn't want). I still
don't use 10 except for occasional testing. The important things that
require Windows (for one thing, income tax software) are still on 7 and
are staying there.

When (and I suppose it's not "if") 10 becomes necessary for those
programs, I'll deal with that problem then. BTW, maybe there'll actually
be a BETTER Windows by then.

Somebody, somewhere who is in a position to monitor many workstations
posted that Win 10 updates have been breaking applications.

How many, how often.... he did not say.

I would recommend Start10, from stardock.com, to make Win 10 look like
Win7. The full version is available as a 30 day trial.

A strong ditto! And after the 30 days it's only $5.

Walter, you might also want to try Classic Shell. I think Start10 is
better, but Classic Shell is also good. And if the $5 is important to
you, you can save it with Classic Shell, which is free.

Also consider ShutUp10
https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

Free antispy tool for Windows 10

O&O ShutUp10 means you have full control over which comfort functions
under Windows 10 you wish to use, and you decide when the passing on
of your data goes too far.

Using a very simple interface, you decide how Windows 10 should
respect your privacy by deciding which unwanted functions should be
deactivated.

O&O ShutUp10 is entirely free and does not have to be installed – it
can be simply run directly and immediately on your PC. And it will not
install or download retrospectively unwanted or unnecessary software,
like so many other programs do these days!

No applications have been broken on either of the two Windows 10
machines here, nor on any of the several others that I support for
friends.
