OMG. It's a LOT of work to set up Firefox for privacy on WinXP!
Shadow replied:
I block addons.mozilla.org with my hosts file. Privacy. For panopticlick reasons, I never install plugins, but I do rarely install extensions but only if they do something useful that the hosts file doesn't do. |

Here's an interesting way to whitelist sites without
installing a plugin - and it works just fine. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewto...p?f=8&t=287280 The forum article did not say what port number to use. You can't use 0. Insert for ip: 0.0.0.0 and for the port: 80 When a site is not in your list, you will be presented with a "Proxy Server Refused Connection" dialog. There is one thing that needs to be discussed. What to do about content servers? That's images, css and media. They are usually sent to the browser via a CDN Server. (Content Delivery Network) Some sites have CDN's, others don't. The way you'll know if it has a CDN after you insert a whitelisted site, then go to it and see if any images are on the page. If not, then it has a CDN. You can find the CDN's address by looking at the webpage source. Right-Click on page and choose "View Source". You'll be presented with html code. Find the first image and glean the CDN's address. Close out and go back and insert the address. So, when you whitelist a site, you will also have to whitelist its CDN Server, if it has one. For example, in the "No Proxy For" box, it would look like this: bleepingcomputer.com, .bleepstatic.com, .yahoo.com, yimg.com I tested this method of whitelisting, and it can be very rigid. For instance, if I insert www.yahoo.com and wanted to go to mail.yahoo.com, it won't let me. So, you have to be specific. yahoo.com will give access to its entire domain. |

It's complex as can be, so to make it simpler, I ask that we each post a SINGLE actionable suggestion in each post (not thousands of suggestions in one post), so that anyone following this in the future can take it one post (suggestion) at a time. Have a garage or rummage sale, and see your computer for $5 or $10. Works everytime. |
