Logging into temporary profile
Hi all,
Running W7 64b pro. Normally, after the Windows startup screen there is the welcome message, and it then logs automatically into my account. Recently it changed. I saw the message "Preparing your desktop" after the startup screen. It logged in to a default desktop with most of my icons missing. There was a message in the sys tray, telling me it logged in to a temporary profile. Since then I was not able to log in my own desktop anymore. I fixed it by placing back a system image from a month before. But what was the reason for this? And what if it will happen again? Thanks, Fokke |

The part stored in the Windows folder area. But there are a couple files in your home directory, and that makes them "your profile". If those files are missing or corrupted, then the OS has some sort of policy to deal with the issue. The updating or writing of the profile, could be happening close to shutdown. In which case, perhaps an SSD would be more vulnerable than a hard drive. That's if the OS shuts down too fast. Developers seem to have the timing right, for working with HDD, but we can never be sure they're verified that everything works right with a consumer SSD. It should behave properly with respect to any flush() sent, but who knows. At one time, Windows did have trouble with shutting down too quickly, with HDD. But they figured it out and fixed it at the time. Paul |

Went trough all the steps, including setting up a new profile. All to no avail, the problem came back. Does anyone have an idea except building a new pc? Fokke |

Fokke What if you temporarily head back to a HDD, instead of an SSD ? Does that work ? If it did work, it would suggest something is messing with the registry, late in shutdown. If you have the budget, and must have an SSD, find an Enterprise one with a supercap in it. Which is intended to "out-last" any truncated system power near shutdown (i.e. PC shuts off power, before SSD is finished internal write). Paul |

Fokke What if you temporarily head back to a HDD, instead of an SSD ? Does that work ? That's a lot of hassle. I went from a HDD to a SSD a year ago. That was a lot of hassle as well. Don't fancy going back. Ran a checkdisk but found nothing. If it did work, it would suggest something is messing with the registry, late in shutdown. That could be the case. I use a program called Shutdown One, which allowed me to create icons on the desktop for a Force Shutdown (and is capable of much more - which I don't use). I always use that to shut down my system, but now I created a normal shutdown icon. Maybe this was a reason. If you have the budget, and must have an SSD, find an Enterprise one with a supercap in it. Which is intended to "out-last" any truncated system power near shutdown (i.e. PC shuts off power, before SSD is finished internal write). I will look for something like this but haven't got a clue what it may cost. Paul For a few times it will boot up in my profile, and then it will create a temporary profile again. After tweaking the registry and logging off, it will work again. For a few times. Right now, I have to learn to live with it, I guess. Fokke |
