Default Clean Install of Win 7 Pro SP1

I want to do a clean install of Win 7 Pro SP1 64 bit OS

I am sure that recently someone gave a description of how to do this and
also how to deal with the slow update problem that has appeared in
recent times.

Can anyone point me to a howto or a web page on how to do this.
The initial install is not a problem as I have the install disk etc.

A Google search of slow reinstall of windows 7 pro will give you a
few choices.

Just a few days ago, I installed Win 7 64-bit and SP1 (both from optical
disk). I then did an update, there were 217 updates. It took about 3 hours.

BTW, IE11 came as update #190.

Hi Maurice,

Whenever I do a new install of W7, I leave off installing
the network drivers until I have installed the following,
which I keep on stick:

Windows Update Agent patch (KB949104):
http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/949104

WuauServ.exe (M$ Update Service) race patches (KB3172605 and
KB3020369 ) roll ups:

http://www.catalog.update.microsoft....aspx?q=3020369
http://www.catalog.update.microsoft....aspx?q=3172605

You need to reboot afterwards.

Then I install the network drivers and M$ Updates doesn't
give me any s*** after that.

Paul alerted me to the last two KB's.

I personally don't install my updates on W7 as they drive
me around the bend and my W7 VM's have extremely limited
Internet access. But I can't recommend that to my customers
for liability issues.

I recently performed a clean install on a machine that had a bad hard
drive. Much to my surprise, when I went to update it, the whole thing
happened very fast. It found 209 updates and installed them all within
maybe three hours or less.

1. Download and save wsusoffline. It will be a .zip file, about 2 mb.
Find it at wsusoffline.net or majorgeeks.com. Save it on another
computer, or to a cd, SD card or whatever.

2. Install Windows 7 clean, i.e. delete the old partition and let the
install create a new one.

2. Do not install network drivers if you can help it.

3. This applies to using wsusoffline v. 1.05 or v. 108.1 to install
Windows updates. I have used both for a number of Windows 7 clean
installs with no problems whatever. The author keeps tweaking it, so a
later version might vary some. The v. 105/108.1 user interface is
arcane to say the least, so I will go into a little detail:

a. After the Windows 7 install is complete, copy the
wsusoffline zip file to the new Windows 7 install and unzip it to the
directory of your choice. I use Desktop. Wsusoffline v. 105/108.1 is
now ready to use. No windows installation required. There is a text
FAQ in the .doc directory which may be of some help. Proceed to b.
when you're comfortable.

b. Open updategenerator.exe and let it download updates.
Updates will be downloaded to the client directory. Go mow the grass
or something because it takes a good while.

c. After update generator.exe finishes downloading updates,
open the client directory and execute updateinstaller.exe. It will
install the updates. Be sure to check the boxes for what you want
done. Also recommend checking the Automatic Boot and Recall box so you
won't have to execute updateinstaller.exe every time the installed
updates require a reboot. Again, finish mowing the grass or wash and
wax the car because installation takes a good while.

d. I usually run the whole wsusoffline routine twice to be
sure it gets all the updates it should. The second run should go much
quicker than the first.

e. When updateinstaller.exe finishes, your clean Windows 7
install should be fully updated, and Windows Update should work. It
will probably find some updates that wsusoffline didn't install. Look
at them carefully, and be sure you want them installed before letting
Windows update do it.

4. Good luck

Thank you all for your input. I will start the new install soon.
