where to find gadget
For long time I have a weather gadget on a Vista computer.
I would like the same gadget on my Windows 7 PC. I can't find the gadget on Internet. The only info about the gadget I have is ©Foreca. Where does the gadget reside on the hard disk, so I might port it to my other computer? -- |\ /| | \/ |@rk \../ \/os |

If you are referring to the Microsoft gadgets, it has been determined the MS Sidebar platform, upon which these gadgets rely, represents a serious security risk. See: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/dn261332 If you have not disabled the gadgets, you can still access them by right clicking on your desktop. The resulting context menu should have a "Gadget" entry towards the bottom. If my instructions do not help, you can refer to this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...dgets-overview (Vista) Despite of using several gadgets on my desktop, when I open the gadget gallery I get an empty window. Choosing the 'download more gadgets' option leads to an MS page stating that gadgets have ended. Still no idea where the gadgets which I use are on my own computer... -- |\ /| | \/ |@rk \../ \/os |

There is no one file you copy over. Microsoft dropped gadgets because they were insecure. See: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/gadgets |

Yes, but that doesn't include the weather gadget I have on my Vista notebook. Windows 7 included a weather gadget, by default, in the gadget gallery. Are you saying there is no weather gadget in 7 or the weather gadget is not the same as in Vista? I use mainly gadgets from http://addgadgets.com/ on my Windows 7/8 machines. They do have a weather gadget too, but I still use an old WeatherBug gadget v1.1.0.8 from many years ago. I also use the Aston v2 on many of my Windows XP, 7, and 8 machines. They have what they call widgets, which is just like gadgets, but their own. And they have a weather widget too. So I have both on many of my Windows 7/8 machines. -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - Kingston 120GB SSD - OE-QuoteFix v1.19.2 Centrino Core Duo T2300 1.66GHz - 4GB - ATI X1400 - Windows XP SP2 |

Strange though, it doesn't show the same weather conditions as on the notebook. I suppose they will after the next renew cycle... Sorry for the trouble. Does this mean you do not apply OS security patches, instead you rely upon your anti virus for protection? I have been running this experiment for years and some machines I religiously update and some I don't. This machine hasn't had any updates since 2006 for example. And none of the machines has had any infections. Although the AV does catch malware on either updated machines or not from time to time trying to get in. The only almost perfect reliable way I know of to stop zero day malware is through sandboxing. Although the next step better is a ROM OS like Windows Embedded. If there is a write line, you can physically disabled it along with physically disenabling the BIOS write line. Now somebody wanting to infect the machine has to have the physical machine itself to infect it. Do you not run a firewall? Yes, just the Windows firewall. Although I am also behind a router and that ignores unsolicited requests anyway (as long as you have it setup that way). One of the worst things you can do is to have your computer respond to unsolicited requests while connected to the Internet. As once an unsolicited BOT is talking to your machine, they are programmed to use every trick in the book to break into your machine. And they can work far faster than any human on the planet. So don't even try to outsmart them. Just totally ignore them and they move on. -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - Kingston 120GB SSD - OE-QuoteFix v1.19.2 Centrino Core Duo T2300 1.66GHz - 4GB - ATI X1400 - Windows XP SP2 |

I am not the greatest genius or anything either. So that is why I started this experiment years ago. And so far it doesn't matter if you do security updates or not. And if you think about it, security updates are mainly focused on IE. Other browsers do their security updates through version/build numbers. And if you don't use IE much for anything (like I don't), then what are the security updates for? To patch a browser that you don't even use? -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - Kingston 120GB SSD - OE-QuoteFix v1.19.2 Centrino Core Duo T2300 1.66GHz - 4GB - ATI X1400 - Windows XP SP2 |
