Thanks to both you and Jonathan. Since his was the easier path to try
first, I did and it solved the problem.

Hi Don,

Check your settings he Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Delete the DWORD
value called 'Hide Messenger'.

And compare the data value between the two for these two keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{FB7199A B-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C
541}\InProcServer32

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{FB7199A B-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C
541}\LocalServer32

One of my machines with Windows XP, Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1106
(xpsp1.020828-1920) and Windows Messenger Version 4.7 (4.7.0105) is

missing
the tools, options, general, 'Automatically log on to Windows Messenger'.

How
can I restore this option to Outlook Express?

The user account in question is a computer administrator on both

machines.
I tried loggin in as user Administrator on the problem machine and the
behavior is the same. I haven't yet seen any Outlook Express or

Messenger
configuration differences between the machines, but obviously something

is
different. The list of files and versions between the two machines in
Outlook Express, help,About Microsoft Outlook Express appear to be

identical.
The entries between the two machines in
HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express also seem to be

the
same.

I've read lots of FAQs and helpful hints for handling various
Messenger/Outlook Express issues, but haven't yet seen anything

specifically
addressing my problem.

thanks for any help,

--Don
