"Windows 8.1 will be a free update for Windows users when it debuts
later this year, said Tami Reller, CFO and CMO of Windows, in a
presentation today at JP Morgan’s Technology, Media and Telecom
Conference in Boston.

"The update for both Windows 8 and Windows RT will be available via the

So, will thw Windows store require a credit card number even if it was
"free" like Apple store does/did?

Test it and tell us.

The services agreement, mentions separate billing information.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...ices-agreement

"9.2. Your billing account.

To pay the charges for a service, you will be asked to provide a
payment method at the time you sign up for that service. You can
access and change your billing account information and payment
method on the Billing and Account Management website
(https://billing.microsoft.com). Additionally, you agree to
permit Microsoft to use any updated account information regarding
your payment method provided by your issuing bank or the applicable
payment network. You agree to keep your billing account information
current at all times. Changes made to your billing account won't
affect charges we submit to your billing account before we could
reasonably act on your changes to your billing account.

Did you have to "sign up" for an account? Guess I'll have to try it
with the laptoop win8.

I signed up for a Microsoft account without a credit card. Of course,
all I can download from the store are free apps till I provide one, but
no requirement for a credit card (or other method of payment).

Thanks! Just tried it & the "account" is really the same as an email
account; have 2 & used the same one that is "subscribed" to the
microsoft community web forum. Good idea to get 1 anyway to supply
necessary email-id for anything suspect or "just in case" of spammers;
I only visit the places every so often to keep them "current".

Got some some free metro apps BUT don't get the "metro commander" as
it is geared for a touchscreen & cannot use the pointer to select an
item; so much for "metro" apps. Will checkout the pinball & solitaire
tonight to see if they "work" the same in requiring a touchscreen to
do anything.

I didn't have the windows app store in my system & had to use google
to find it; the url I used is "www.windows8appstore.com" which is
different from "www.appwindowsstore.com" that I saw elsewhere.

Solitaire is ad-ware & the adverts across the top is easy to ignore;
pinball wants your account id & wants to have full access to your
account (this is where a 2nd m$ email-id would come handy). Didn't
supply id & uninstalled pinball. Kept solitaire.

Metro commander had promise as a "file commander"; too bad it is
restricted to touchscreen even tho I was able to "drop down" to
something & get stuck since I don't have a touchscreen laptop.

Saw mobiletech video on youtube on reviewing a Lenova touchscreen
laptop; just about each time the screen is "touched", it wobbled; think
the same will happen to a full sized touchscreen monitor, especially if
they have the gyroscope like that on tablets where one can do portrait
or landscape.....

Hopefully they fix Windows 8 as it is a dog sh1t OS. The GUI sucks big
time and isn't even stable on a laptop with the screen flipping to
tablet mode all on its flipping own. Have used windows since 2.01, and
this version 8 is the worst yet.

I can only imagine the idiocracy going on at Microsoft that thinks a
laptop interface needs to be commingled with a tablet interface, and no
less than 6 different menu interfaces of which some useful ones are
obscured.

Really dumb move.

Geez, that's quite an opinionated answer!
You are condemning the whole thing because the whistles and bells are
not to your liking. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your
view point, many at least partially agree, including myself.

Business customers don't want the training costs and productivity losses
that can occur with the tablet based GUI. It actually goes further, in
that changes to recent versions of MS Office Apps are also a subject of
hate and discontent.

What I remember of windows prior to 3.xx is very little. The main
impression was a primitive GUI, not much different from some of the DOS
third party GUI's. We used task switching with DOS, so that was not
revolutionary either. As I think back 3.11 was perhaps the better of the
old versions, due to the ability of programs to access hardware, much as
they did in DOS. This was what upset the "control freaks" to no end.

The OS is fine, it's the GUI that sucks. There's a big difference
between the two and those that don't understand that shouldn't be
commenting.

You are condemning the whole thing because the whistles and bells are
not to your liking. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your

I was involved with software and information security for 37 years
before I retired. I wrote many a interfaces and realize the importance
of a clean, easy and consistent GUI.

Business customers don't want the training costs and productivity losses
that can occur with the tablet based GUI. It actually goes further, in
that changes to recent versions of MS Office Apps are also a subject of
hate and discontent.

I weaned myself off of Microsoft Office a decade ago and been using Open
Office ever since. But you make an excellent point in that businesses
don't want the expense, but neither did I and why I changed. Plus, my
experience is sticking to open formats of files is critical when you
want to keep old documents over the years. Microsoft doesn't offer this
portability and longevity.

What I remember of windows prior to 3.xx is very little. The main
impression was a primitive GUI, not much different from some of the DOS
third party GUI's. We used task switching with DOS, so that was not
revolutionary either. As I think back 3.11 was perhaps the better of the

1.x was unusable and unstable as a crack addict.

2.x was barely usable, but progress.

3.x was where it started to get good, but still had major memory and
stability issues. WFWG 3.11 was the best version, and was refitted with
the the TCP/IP networking that worked better.

W95 was the best progressive release to date. They really fixed a lot
of issues in this release. All releases since have progressively
offered less and less in the way of improvements.

XP was OK. Better memory support was its fame.

Vista was a pig. Windows 7 was actually just a fix/upgrade for Vista
mistakes. But after learning and costs, 7 put some usability back in.

Part of Microsoft's problem is Windows has now become so complex without
adding value, its bloated and hard to change. Stagnated in its past
successes, new releases are repackaging or knee jerks.

As Windows 8 is huge mistake, so huge I am recanting about Apple. I was
a PC fan since 1983 and now going to do Apple if Microsoft doesn't let
us downgrade for free to Windows 7. HP and Microsoft have said no to
downgrade support, so my next one is an Apple.

Now why Microsoft didn't decide to make the two interfaces distinct and
different is beyond me. Why clutter one with the other when it adds
only aggravation and instability? Mobile needs are different than
desktop needs and Microsoft blew it when thinking GUI.

One problem that will plague Microsoft in the tablet market is the OS is
a pig, needs a power burner for a CPU, sluggish, needs more memory and
storage, bloated the batteries don't last long. Priced above Apple,
either Apples iPad or a Samsung/Asus Android tablet makes much more sense.

If MS doesn't fix it good in 8.1, they will be on a fast ride down.
