Default Homegroup Questions

Haven't used any networking previously but just got laptop (upgraded from
W8.1 to W10) and trying to network with W8.1 desktop. Desktop connected to
wireless gateway by Ethernet while laptop on wireless. Tried creating
HomeGroup on desktop and then joining with laptop. This works as expected
initially but, after laptop goes to sleep mode or either computer is
rebooted, selecting desktop from home group on laptop (of visa versa), home
group comes back saying "This PC is currently unavailable". If I check File
Explorer under NETWORK, however, I have a USERS folder for the opposite
computer with my subfolder that I can still access my files from. If I
leave the Homegroup, however, that subfolder disappears and I'm left with
only the Default and Public folder. Is this the way this is supposed to
work? Would have thought I would have kept access under home group. I've
run HomeGroup and networking troubleshooters with no issues found. Network
discovery is turned on. I've set up the folders that I want shared on both
computers. What am I missing or is there some other place I should be
looking for details of how Network and Homegroup are supposed to work?

Unless you are in love with the homegroup, and just have to have one,
connect directly. I have a desktop and an laptop. I fist go into one
in the properties and share that drive or folder. I then go into the
other and connect to it in "This PC", or the equivalent on your OS.
This is the place where it list the drives and connections.

Make sure the computer you are trying to connect to, is on.

Then in This PC click Computer

Add Network location, and when requested ad the location

\\STUDIO\My Documents

I find homegroups wake up a bit slower than the net work. I too see systems under network but if I wait a few minutes
they show under Homegroup.... eventually.
