Here anyway. For me, on 7, 8.1, and 10, I can just start typing after WinKey or after clicking the Start orb. The search box is automatically looking for text input. No need to explicitly select it. Clearly something puzzlingly different in my case. https://www.dropbox.com/s/9vbqid7hkb...zzle.mp4?raw=1 That doesn't look like the native Win10 Start menu, does it? If you're running something like Classic Shell, you'd probably have to look there for a setting that restores the default search behavior. |

If I understand correctly, for me the number would be zero. ;-) I do deal with files, but never via the Run dialog. I use Windows Explorer or its Win10 equivalent. If I understand correctly... I don't think you did. I wasn't suggesting that anyone but me wanted to select a file by the method I'm seeking. Simply explaining to Mr. Man-wai Chang that 'selecting a file in a folder' was a frequent everyday occurrence. No, I specifically meant selecting a file via the Start Run dialog. That doesn't sound like a good idea to me, and it's not something I can remember doing. |

I don't see a "Copy File Location" function as in browsers. Are you trying to specify a shortcut to the file as text? Anyway, I no longer follow, Your Honor. Classic shell?) to make your PC look like WinXP, and are then puzzled that it doesn't look like Win10? |

I'd forgotten about installing the Classic Menu 18 months or so ago. I've found a setting that appears to give it focus immediately on using Win key. Here's a screenshot in case anyone else has the problem. https://www.dropbox.com/s/etfoy760nx...l-01.jpg?raw=1 Terry, East Grinstead, UK |

Win r, Opens Run box, then type: 'Explorer /select, Ctrl+V' Enter That looks like an efficient method. Jonathan's method works, even programmatically if your macro program is compatible with whatever weird sort of programming Microsoft is using in the Windows key dialogue area. WinKey (paste filespec) *Right-Click* Open file location Programmatically, you use the Apps key instead of right clicking (to bring down the dialogue). But then you must figure out how to select the top choice (of two). Programmatically, that appears to be very difficult without maybe using a mouse command that is always less desirable. Something even weirder from Microsoft this way comes. After you press WinKey, you should be able to type or paste. Something is wrong with your system if you cannot. There is no text box. There is no focus indication (like other recent Microsoft harebrained ideas). You just type or paste. |
